Let's Play Crusader Kings Deus Vult

(Vanilla + Deus Vault + 2.1 beta patch + DVIP + DVIP addon + BOPACK)

Crusader Kings

Quote from: Wikipedia
Crusader Kings is a grand strategy game made by Paradox Interactive about the period from December 26 1066 until December 30 1452. It was released in 2004. Unlike other past Paradox titles (Hearts of Iron, Victoria and the Europa Universalis series), Crusader Kings focuses on building a dynasty instead of a country, having similarities to role-playing games and even The Sims. The lead game programmer was Johan Andersson. As with the other Paradox Interactive history games, Crusader Kings must be considered a macro-management real-time strategy game (as moves are played out simultaneously and continuously) but typically involves far more planning than the fast-paced action that is usually associated with real-time strategy.

Deus Vult
Quote from: Wikipedia
The expansion pack redesigns some of the basic features of the game, such as DNA inheritance, religious warfare, use of friends and rivals, etc. In addition, new scripting commands were added as well as new character traits.

Deus Vult Improvement Pack (DVIP)
Quote from: Wikipedia
A few years ago fans came up with a mod that substantially improved gameplay and historical verisimilitude called DVIP. It added several new cultures and titles, as well as allowing female rulership.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crusader_Kings_(video_game)#DVIP

(Sorry for the crappy Wikipedia description of DVIP; I can't access the paradox forums right now so I can't pull up a better one)

Some technical info:
System Requirements
  • Windows 98SE / 2000 / XP (it works on my Vista just fine - have not tried on 7 yet. Also, they sell a Mac version)
  • Pentium III 450 128 Mb RAM
  • 600 MB Free Hard Drive Space
  • 4 Mb Video Card DirectX Compatible
  • DirectX compatible Sound Card
  • DirectX 9.0 or higher

You can get CK+DV for $25 from gamersgate.com - no DRM.

This is by far my favorite Paradox game. Although I have hundreds more hours in HOI2 and I wish I loved Victoria the most - Crusader Kings is the game I can always turn to for some guaranteed pleasure.

Let's get started:

This is my first time playing DVIP. I immediately notice there are some different counties available at start of the 1066 scenario. I semi-randomly select Belgrade. I intend to start as a Count and hopefully work my way up to Duke and then maybe King. But I plan on playing conservatively this time around. Most of my games usually result in a quick rise to power followed by a generation or two of trying to hold together a shattering kingdom. This time I'll take it slow...

Difficulty is Normal Coward.

I give you: Belgrade

Let's look at a different map:

An economic map!

A political map:

Bigger maps!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ok... enough looking at maps. Let's figure out who I am.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Enough worrying about me and my relations. It is time to turn my attention toward ruling my county.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Almost ready to start my day to day ruling... but first I should check on my liege. I forgot to do that before
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now that I have become better acquainted with the world around me I can start worrying about how I will make my dynasty more powerful.

Let's see... it is 12/26/66 (1066, that is). At the moment I have one son. He is 7. I am 55. I need to live 9 more years to see him come of age and better secure my dynasty's future. This may not go well.
Only time will tell.

I'm changing the format of my posting... all those spoilers was annoying. I just did it to make the number of pics on screen at one time more manageable for the lower bandwidth peeps...

Sooo... we left off on Jan 11, 1077.
I'm 18 and heir-less, but otherwise things are OK.

Things go well during January, the Count of Corfu wants another alliance... no thanks
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I recklessly decide the friend of my enemy is my enemy - but nothing comes of it
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

February rolls around...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Having been taught to respect my peoples I travel amongst them to the chapel on my patron saint's day. I gain the modesty trait for my actions.

April 5, 1077. The Prince of Kiev asks to form an alliance. He is Russian Orthodox and has 11 vassals.... a pretty powerful man.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I accept the offer. At this point I am sure how far I can trust my liege to protect me, so some foreign aid may be useful. At this point, my loyalty to my liege is so low that I could pledge allegiance to the Prince of Kiev, if I wanted.

On May 5 I discover my wife is kind of messed up...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is both Just and Selfish... Completely aware that she is my steward, I advise her to remain selfish.

During June I discover my wife is expecting (hooray if its a boy!) and my Liege dies. His son, Romanos, a fosterling in my court, has taken his father's title.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I pay the boy homage, acknowledging him as my liege. I hold no grudges against him, even if he is only 8, and my lord.

1078 comes around... not much else happened in '77, except I got a new chancellor, the old one died. On February 2, 1078 I examine the situation to the east. My emperor seems occupied warring against turks. It is pretty much his purple mass vs the enemy yellow, on the second map:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
(note, the yellow mass extends all the way south east to the edge of the map...)

March 1, 1078. Dammit, I am cursed with a daughter.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Another useless mouth to feed.

I finish March off deciding to have my eldest daughter raised by nannies. She already takes after her mother with 1 stewardship skill, being a little selfish will only increase that.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I also peek around the empire- it seems there is some internal strife in addition to the Turkish problem. The Prince of Epirus is rebelling...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

June 3, 1078. The Pope has called for a crusade to liberate Jerusalem. Being Orthodox, this affects me little.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My ally, the Prince of Kiev, has been attacked. Let's examine the situation more closely:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems all combat will be far away, near Kiev's northern provinces. If I get involved I won't do any fighting. It is too far away and it would cost way too much to send troops there. And even then, what gain could I possibly achieve?
At the same time, I cannot see how going to war would hurt. My ally will surely win- Dvina is small and weak, Kiev is big and strong.
I declare war in assistance to my ally.

Dvina is screwed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kiev troops arrive at the enemy. It is 1261 vs 370. This war will be short.

My people think a monster is in our lands! Hah- I shall handle the beat myself!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...and... I am severely wounded...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I also am valorous... if that makes up for it...
I could really use a son right about now.

My emperor made money off my going to war for my ally. He must have declared war as well- and then made peace, getting 20 gold. That also forced peace on me- but I got nothing. Weaksauce.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

May 18, 1079. My wife is expecting a child.

1079 finishes off like a roller coaster ride:

I send my daughter to be raised by a local noble, its a pity shes not a boy, else she'd be worthy of my time.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My neighbor becomes the papal controller:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My dad's second wife demands rewards for her service:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Which I grant... 6.51 gold is worth the benefits of her (amazing) skills.

And last, but far from least, my wife becomes ill:

1080 is a year of victory and expansion!
On January 11, 1080 I declare war on neighboring pagans.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My liege and Kiev allies war to support me as well. I declared on Severin, but his liege warred me in return... no biggie.
The Penchenegs are already engaged in conflict with some Catholic states.
I am able to muster 1540 men. Since I am severely wounded my marshal Nephon leads the men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Severin tries for peace in February, but I decline. I want the land.
That and I am too busy celebrating the birth of a SON!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I manage to take Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But at this point I am broke. I decide to make peace now so I can disband my armies and stop paying for them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They accept. In the deal I gained the title count of Severin. The land is mine!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1080 finishes up without much else worth mentioning.

1081 seems to fly by -another good/bad year.
My wife gets pregnant.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Then three different miracle workers offer to heal my wife's illness.
I pay the first- to no result.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I decline the second, putting my faith in god and not trusting these scam healers - and my wife's situation deteriorates - she develops consumption
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I tell the third to bugger off as well- to no result...

After all the negatives, a positive rolls along: Another son is born
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is named Nephon.

Just as the year is about to end, I discover my dead sister's former husband is the papal controller.

I'll try...

Editing/cropping pics ends up taking more time than anything else for me- so I wanted to see how it went with just some batch converting the pics to small format/sequenced names and then leaving them as is...

In the fist post the pics are like 60% size, I can start doing that again if it helps.

1082 is a year to be lost in history.
The Catholic Pope kicks it, but another just takes his place.
Geza, remains the Papal controller.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While I am in no position to do anything about Geza right now - I swear to further investigate my sister's death in the future.

Nearing the end of the first quarter of the year I find myself wealthy enough to invest in a provincial improvement. Belgrade, my home, is already built up pretty well. Severin, my newly conquered province is much more bare. I decide to supplement the existing road system with a tile-factory.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully a bit of industrialization will help expedite the province's change to a civilized state (the populace is currently pagan and of Pecheneg culture... heathens).

My daughter Eudoxia's 5th birthday sneaks up on me. Having been raised by nannies I really kind of lost track of her. Oh how they grow so quickly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send her off to the court for a formal education. She may prove to be a decent wife to some man in the future, with a varied skill set.
While daughters are of little direct value to me, the diplomatic advantages of marrying them off can be rewarding- or so I've been told.
My only experience involving a woman being married off is my sister- and she is dead.

I discover the eastern Byzantine empire is encountering some massive difficulties...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The emperor is still involved in a war with the turks and it seems some smaller new nation states have popped up and are warring my emperor as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is an old man, 62, with no appointed chancellor. His low diplomacy skill is drastically affecting his vassal's loyalty ratings.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That is probably resulting in more rebellions fewer vassals allowing the emperor to use their troops- which surely hurts in the face of that Turkish threat.
At the moment a 12 year old boy, Ioannes Iasites, the Prince of Athens, is in line to be the next emperor.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is actually a capable boy, and with the help of advisers and aids, I feel he could help lead the empire in the right direction while bringing all of his vassals better under control.
We'll see how it goes.

My boy Sabas turns 2 in August. I need to groom the child to be a Count. At worst he will take my titles when I die, but ideally I'd like to get him titles as soon as he is of age. Even at 2 years he is evidently good with numbers and likes gold. I will send him to the nannies where he can improve his stewardship even more.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

To my shock and surprise, Nephon, my marshal, has the nerve to disrespect me and seek employment elsewhere.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I gave the man the glory of a successful war! I treat him well! And he has the nerve to claim I am of poor reputation?!?!?! He is the coward! I am the Just, Valorous, Brilliant Strategist (among other traits)! If he is holding my severe wound against me...  >:(
I send him into a prison, eating bread and water!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nephon, Marshal of Belgrade's transgressions cause me to be known a cruel. I also lose a lot of standing in the eyes of god...

But those problems are easily forgotten. Just one day after the Nephon problem I find out we are expecting a child.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also discover that my steward is stealing from the county coffers.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While it ultimately does not cost me, or drastically affect the county, Steward Bartolomaios walks away 13 and a half gold richer.
(You can also notice another prince left the empire between Oct 8 and Nov 30, as seen in the last two maps)

While things could have gone better this year, they could also have been worse. As 1083 approaches, I am thankful for the health of my children and the non-declining health of myself- but at the same time I could wish for better security in the empire and a more grateful, honest court.

During my standard start-of-year checkup, I notice I am paying 3.7 gold to my liege monthly.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My other expenses only amount to 0.4 gold, but between my duty to liege and church donations I am profiting a meagre 0.4g monthly.
My outrage can hardly be expressed in words.

I send my second son, Nephon, to be raised by a local noble.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is already a clever budding diplomat, a noble can only help that.
But, I will note I am annoyed by my choice to name him the same as my ungrateful Marshal.

Ahh, this is better:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems little Ramonos no longer feels the need to strip me of all my income.
My duty to liege is equivalent to his scutage- so the higher my duty is, the fewer troops I can field. Ultimately that leaves me with less money and weaker defenses.
So paying less duty goes beyond financial issues and even touches on security...

I feel like I have been ruling well. Things seem to have stabilized in my realm:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Stability is important. It has little affect on a day-to-day basis, but during crisis, it can be a realm saver.

My dear Natalija has birthed me a son. Wonderful.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Little Dorotheos further secures my family's future.

In general the more sons the better- but no one wants unlanded children. When my boys come of age, should I not be able to provide them with land and titles, it will look poorly of me. My prestige will suffer.
At the moment I can grant Severin to my eldest when he comes of age, but that will leave me with only one province and still with two unlanded sons.
The Synadenos dynasty will not be a weak, pathetic dynasty. I will find honor and prestige for my sons.
...eventually.

Things are looking even worse for the empire.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Prince of Thracesia desires an alliance with me. My clerks say he is rather disloyal to the emperor.
He is in a precarious position and engaged in war against the Seljuk Turks.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I decline his offer. I hope to avoid the eastern conflict as long as possible.

The Severin tile factory is completed in August. I am not financially able to build another improvement yet, though.

I have decided to modify my realm's laws. My father adjusted our inheritance laws to Salic Primogeniture many years ago. It helped secure my inheritance of his title, and it will help ensure Sabas takes my title(s) when I pass on.
But now I am taking a closer look at our government and administration laws.
We currently practice Royal Prerogative. A law almost exclusively followed in Byzantium.
It is of my opinion that this law is contributing to the downfall of the empire.
As much as I hate to admit it, the empire is failing. Internal strife and Muslim invaders are collapsing Byzantium.
In an attempt to prepare for Belgrade's future, I will change the law to more closely follow the trend of the rest of the world: Traditional Custom.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another miracle worker has offered to heal my wife.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I refuse to be scammed again and send the oaf off. I put my faith in god.
And it workers.... kind of.
Natalija's condition improves from consumption to plain illness.
While she is still sick, she is just less sick.

As the year comes winding down to an end, I am presented the opportunity to round up some extra taxes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This situation is one I do not take lightly.
I could walk away with an extra 180 gold at the expense of negative traits and a stability drop.
I could walk away with 80 gold at the expense of stability.
Or,
I can take no extra tax and be known as generous.

With 180 gold I could start two new constructions in Belgrade and Severin. Or, I could build one more expensive construction, like a training camp for extra troops...
Even 90 gold would be a financial blessing.
Under most different circumstances I think I would take the tax. But right now things are far from good. Byzantium is failing. Muslims are encroaching west from the east. Vassals are rebelling left and right. Soon I fear I will be forced into a war- but I cannot be certain against who...
I choose to let the peasants keep their spare cattle. I do so not for the generosity trait but for the stability. I feel that stability may be worth more traded in at a later date- and I do not want to risk not having it when I need it most.

As the year comes to a close I take a moment to reflect on how I am doing personally...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I feel well regarded amongst my peers- my prestige is rather high.
But my piety is far from impressive. This is mostly due to my treatment of Marshal Nephon in October '82.
I suppose it was cruel of me to imprison him, but I still stand by my decision. That man was out of line, declaring me as having a bad reputation...

January 1084:
My daughter Theodora is five. How I wish she was a boy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She would make an excellent soldier as a man. A child to be proud of...
But... she is a girl.
Off to the monastery for her- martial prowess is not proper in a girl.

The Princess of Thrace also wants an alliance.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is a mere 16 years old. This would be a grand opportunity to arrange a marriage with one of my sons- if one was of age.
Or, dare I say, a marriage with me- if my wife was out of the picture...
But... my sons are too young and my wife is alive. Too bad.
I shall accept the alliance, though. It is possible for something good to come of this in due time. Unlikely, but possible.

Looking at the map it seems Kiev has imploded.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They were once a mighty power, extending from the far north all the way to the Black Sea. No longer.
Events like this remind my why my father taught me to be patient and thoughtful. Act too quickly or recklessly and fortune may come fast. But decline will be on fortune's heels.

February 1084:
Byzantium is on the decline.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am now facing genuine worry.
The turks are spreading like a disease in Anatolia. The emperor still holds the strait, but for how long is anyone's guess.
Internal strife occupies the empire's armies nearly as much as the foreign threat. While we, Belgrade, have been uninvolved in the war all my life, my liege has fought near constantly.
I do not know how long it will be before war comes to us...

March 1084:
I foolishly allied with Thrace in January. Reckless.
I should have been wise enough to look past the possible gains from an alliance to see the even greater threats.
Thrace just declared war on Byzantium.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now I must decline aid. This will not look good of me... To renege on my ally... But to not do so would mean war with my Liege's liege and assured loss.

July 1084:
I have raised the tolls on the burghers. The introduction of sculptures in Belgrade and Severin negated the negative result of increased taxes.
I also am able to build a mine in Belgrade.

1084 continues with little more to note.

1085:

My Prince has left the empire...
I am not sure what to think...

Popes seem to die a lot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Geza remains papal controller.

I send Dorotheos to be raised by nannies.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can only hope that one day I will be able to provide him with land.
The way things are going it is more likely he will be a courtier his entire life.

Thrace failed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Poor young Ripsime Baghuashi. I wonder what came of her. I can only hope the Byzantine soldiers treated her as a Princess when they took her captive- if they captured her at all.
Only one thing is for certain... the Baghashi dynasty has come to an end.

Hungary has gone to ware with the pagans east of Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am all two aware that controlling either one of those two provinces, along with Severin, would essentially open me to the possibility of creating the title Prince of Wallachia.
Turnu, the eastern of the two provinces may be take-able.
If Hungary goes for the nearer province first I have a shot at taking Turnu alone.
I go to war.

I raise armies out of Belgrade and Severin. Being severely wounded from monster hunting, I do not lead the troops. My marshal leads the Severin regiment and my former steward Bartolomaios leads the Belgrade regiment.
They march on Turnu.

484 soldiers garrison the province. 2113 fly my banner.

1086:
While awaiting word from my armies to the east, a miracle worker offers to heal me.

War is expensive. I only have 61 gold, and the healer asks 50.
...
I pay.

My condition deteriorates and I fall ill.
Crap.

Nephon engages in battle on the 1st of February.

I decline the peace offer and begin siegeing Turnu.

Gah!

My Prince makes peace with the enemy, forcing the peace on to me just before I was able to finish the siege and captured Turnu.
That little brat also got paid 34 gold from Turnu and 97 gold from Pecheneg in the deal!
My armies did the fighting. My men died. Not that little brats!
Romanos just pissed me off.
Now to war again would cost me a huge prestige hit, since we just made peace.
Gar!

Peaking back at Byzantium, things still seem in decline.

The boy emperor Ioannes Iasites is effectively a buffer between my liege and the Seljuk turks. His success or failure remains important, even though we are no longer part of the empire.

haha! A blessing!

I have recovered from my illness! I am right as rain!

Belgrade is prosperous!

1086 was a true roller coaster year!
Despite my failure to gain pagan land and the collapse of Byzantium, I feel my return to good health makes up for it all.

I look forward to 1087. I plan to travel some more, with my improved health and all...

The name Nephon must carry soldierly traits with it. My boy will make an excellent soldier. Should I fail to grant him titles, he will probably do well serving as Sabas' marshal.
To be sure of his martial skills, I send him to train in the army.

With my health back I am able to participate in local tourneys.
And during one such tourney the Duke of Slavonia insulted me:

I will not stand for that. I demand immediate compensation- but nothing comes of it.

Now that asshat wants to be my hunting buddy!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Is he kidding me?
The glory is mine, alone.

It seems the Duke of Slavonia cannot just let it go.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I demand compensation again. Nothing comes of it.

A new Thrace wants an alliance.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They must have just gone independent from the empire.
I decline without hesitation.
It seems Byzantium is on the verge of utter destruction:

Interesting.

A new realm has emerged in Gotland. They call themselves the Teutonic Order. I will keep tabs on them to see how they fare. I believe there are many pagan states in that area- surely these religious knights plan to take advantage of that.

1087 was a somewhat quiet year.
