This will be a year of recovery, I can feel it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Archbishop of Rostov will hopefully take care of Trpimir soon and then everyone can just kind of chill.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My court, especially Gagik, remind me I am not very old at 44. But the fact remains that I am the last living sibling of 13. That makes me feel old.

Of course; nothing can go well for me for long:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Tribe of Cuman have attacked my vassal, the Count of Bilyar.
My advisers needed to go far to find someone with information on the Cumans.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Koza of Cumans. Thats their leader. He is a 51 year old pagan swine. The problem is he has 23 or so vassals in a realm spanning over a thousand miles north to south.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oh, and over one hundred thousand men at his command...
But, no one ever claimed I was wise.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've gone to war in support of my vassal.

With the Archbishop of Rostov busy sieging Rostov I have sent for Helene Countess of Smolensk to raise her levies.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She will act as my main front against the pagans.
The province of Sharukan is near Smolensk
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Rather than wait for the Cumans to come to me, I hope to strike them hard, fast, and first. Perhaps I will be able to gain an early advantage and walk away with a favorable peace.

Kellinikos, Archbishop of Rostov, has sent word that the province of Rostov is back under his control.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There was no word of Trpimir's fate. That is for the better, my wife is deeply concerned and I fear for the worst.

The Countess of Smolensk's marshal is marching on Sharukan with just under 10,000 men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
May God give them victory.

Intriguing news from the east...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Helene's men have arrived in Sharukan and laid siege to the local small castle. The odd part is that they encountered no resistance from any field armies. And their scouts reported no sightings of relief armies on the way...

The Sharukan garrison surrendered to the Countess of Smolensk’s troops.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Her marshal is advancing to an area known as Desht-i-Kipchak.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Reports indicate a formidable castle defends the region, but no enemy troops have been spotted… yet…

I am truly confused.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Cumans seem to be letting my army ravage their lands without putting up any sort of a resistance. Our records indicated that Koza could raise more than one hundred thousand men to fight for him but we have yet to see a single fielded army.

The marshal of Smolensk has sent word that he captured the Desht-i-Kipchak castle.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They stormed the walls at the crack of dawn and took the defending garrison by surprise.
Boris Rurikovick, the marshal of Smolensk, still has just under 8800 capable men in his army.
It is evident that the Cumans have an army fielded somewhere, though, for I’ve received news that Bilyar fell to the Cumans
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am going to attempt to broker a peace deal, now.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am offering the Cumans Bilyar and the return of Desht-i-Kipchak in exchange for Sharukan and 500 gold.
I am willing to lose Bilyar considering its geographical location. It is completely surrounded by Cuman lands. But I do not just want to give it up for free especially after showing Koza that I am not to be messed with by taking two of his provinces. But I understand I cannot get too greedy and demand more than I deserve, so Sharukan will suffice. It is on the edge of the Cuman tribe’s influence, and thus more easily defended by me…
I have instructed my retainers to fetch me at once when word of Koza’s response has arrived.

Word of the Cumans came; just not the message I was hoping for.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Boris, in Desht-i-Kipchak, has sent word that 10,000 Cumans are en route to his location. Koza himself leads one of the two incoming regiments. May God give Boris strength and victory.

I am plagued with bad, and awkward, news.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My vassal Kuman, Count of Padua, has gone to war with the Kingdom of Order of Santiago in faraway Iberia... This is an issue I cannot be bothered with. My western holdings are becoming more of a menace than they are worth.

Cuman forces have engaged Boris:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Marshal of Smolensk’s message indicated that an advance regiment of about 6000 has taken to the field. Boris claims to be fielding just over eight thousand capable men. He is confident for his army is made up of more men-at-arms and knights.

Fate is turning for the worst in Desht-i-Kipchak
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Cuman reinforcements, the bulk of the previously scouted army, have arrived to make battle.
Boris is now outnumbered five to three.
I’ve met with my court to discuss our options. Basilakios, my marshal is confident that the Archbishop of Rostov has enough men to reinforce a retreating Smolensk army and then hold a position in Sharukan, or Rostov at worst.
Gagik informs me that the Smolensk regiments are being sustained by the Countess Helene’s treasury, so my finances are actually quite secure. He says we should be able to support any domestic forces for a long enough period to put up a decent fight near my core domain… But he advises against me sending any of my demesne regiments far from our borders, the cost of supporting them on a long journey would be extreme.
Andronikos is confident that Smolensk and Rostov will stand with me during a prolonged conflict, but he cannot say the same of Vidin and Dioclea. My sons should support me as well.
For now I will wait and see the outcome of the battles in Desht-i-Kipchack.

As I have partially expected, Koza refused my peace.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now that he has his armies in place and sees that I am only fielding two diminished regiments, he will likely attempt to wage war until he can achieve a dominating position.
Of note is a brief and rather vague message from the Countess Helene, though: Apparently Koza has withdrawn some of his units from battle with Boris…

Victory against the Cumans!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
God must be with us for we have achieved a victory in the face of many enemy armies!
Boris reports over 2000 men lost, though… He estimates his force to be no more than 6300 strong, if that. The Cumans have fortified positions surrounding the region, too… Boris will not last long without relief.
As such, I am sending a new peace request to the Cumans. Our victory in Desht-i-Kipchack has emboldened me, and I hope to bluff Koza into thinking I have commited more troops from my core domain by demanded a personally favorable peace deal, again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am willing to trade Bilyar for Sharukan and 500 gold.

Koza has declined the peace offering.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Several other small Cuman tribes are joining their King against me, too.
Boris reports enemy regiments marching on his position from the north and south.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The new entrants to the conflict are Cuman vassals located east and north of Bilyar.
As is I will have enough trouble facing Koza’s demesne troops in Sharukan area. If these new enemies were to march on Rostov or Smolensk, they would could potentially catch my vassals off guard and from behind…
I need to make sacrifices.
I am going to offer Koza peace again, but this time I will yield my claims on Bilyar, Sharukan, and Desht-i-Kipchak with no indemnities paid.

Somewhat good news from the east:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Koza King of Cuman has accepted my peace. The problem is that I have gained nothing out of it, and lost Bilyar... My wife is also not so happy, for her son was the Count of Bilyar...
But, I am no longer at risk of being overrun by Pagans.
Also of note: my vassal in Padua seems to have made peace in his little war...

A sad day today. A day of remembrance and mourning.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My long time trusted and skilled steward Gagik Cherven has passed to God's domain.
His son, Zebislav has inherited his claims and wealth
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Zebislav is my niece's spawn. Gagik's only other son (with his past wife) died in 1139.
My wife, Kyranna, is skilled with money.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is currently my Spy Master, but that is easily changed.
My daughter, Eudoxia is equally skilled in intrigue as my wife
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She will be my new spy master, allowing Kyranna to take Gagik's place as Steward of the realm.

My marshal, Basilakios is 39 and unmarried.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He comes from an unknown family, but the man in charge of your military must be shown respect.
Anastaso is a new widow...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps I can help her get over the mourning of the loss of her late husband, Gagik.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have the two married!

Finally! Peace and prosperity is coming to the realm!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The state of Serbia is improving- the realm is more stable. My vassals are also expressing less disloyalty! I am finally getting my opportunity to let the Kingdom relax...

Zebislav, heir of Gagik needs an education.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will have him trained in the army. I can never have too many good soldiers.

They were all catch up posts. I had all that stuff played out already... I just needed to write it up and post.

I am finally caught up. The last couple months of the last post are actually new...

Ouch, looks like things were getting quite bad. At least things are going for the better now.

Also, posting to watch.

The Kingdom of Serbia remains capable.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am still amazed by Byzantium’s apparent rise/fall fate.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
One year they are tattered by civil war and foreign invasion while the next they are united and powerful… I suppose the destruction of the Seljuk Turks has removed quite a bit of stress from the empire.
The newest and likely greatest threat to this part of the world lies in the Tribe of Cumans.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Their pagan influences are a blight to the world.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I remain strong, healthy, and committed to my kingdom.
I have recently visited both of my sons in Karvuna. Dauid travelled from Crimea and I came from Belgrade. Xenophon, my eldest, hosted a great feast.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Xenophon is well. I met his children, a boy and a girl, and his wife is healthy. It seems to be a Synadenos tradition to have steward wives. Both my sons are very well skilled in the art of war, but my boy Dauid seems a little more sharp when it comes to other issues.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfortunately Dauid can’t seem to keep his pants on. He has more children than I could count. I hear he is also far from holding the good graces of the church.
But Dauid at least is not brewing rebellious resentment towards me. My visit to Karvuna was not without danger, I would lie if I said my spy master did not warn of the possibility that my eldest would try and kill me during my stay.
But, I live. My visit was concluded with outwardly amicable feelings between myself and my sons.

I’ve found a way to tie my step-son chancellor to my family even more-so than he already is.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will have him married to my daughter, Eudoxia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is 19 and without a proper suitor. She will go bad if I leave her alone for much longer.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They will be married immediately. Step-siblings no longer; husband and wife!

After I arranged the marriage of her son to my daughter, my wife Kyranna has questioned my intents for my eldest daughter, Vezhav.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vezhav is chaste, zealous, and a scholarly theologian. She seems as though she’d be happiest married to the books in the church… But I suppose my wife is right, my eldest daughter cannot go unmarried…
As such I shall marry her to the next best thing, aside from religion:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My Diocese Bishop, Michael Serblias. A match made for heaven.
The best part of the marriage is that Michael, through his church connections, is capable of paying a proper marriage duty for a King’s eldest daughter
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My treasury swells; 567 gold richer. I am drawing monthly income of 22.46 gold on top of that, too!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If only I could find a priest willing to take money in exchange for raising my standing with the church…

The backbone of that man!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Michael, my Diocese Bishop and new husband to my daughter, is an adulterer!
I had heard the rumors that he was a lustful man prior the marriage but I didn’t think he’d have the nerve to act this way.
I will not let such disrespect for my eldest daughter go unpunished.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will have him executed.

Sadly I have no man capable of filling the newly vacant position of Diocese Bishop
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps I should not have been so quick to swing the ax- for Eudoxia brought up an excellent point regarding my lack of bishop, yesterday. Eudoxia has spent a lot of time with Vezhav, they are sisters, after all. Eudoxia also has access to many ‘little birds’, being my spy master. She has come to the conclusion that it is entirely possible, perhaps even likely, that Vezhav made up the story of Michael being an adulterer. The issue came up with my daughter accusing him of cheating, no one actually caught him, or admitted to it… Vezhav was also content staying unmarried… I may have been fooled.

Eudoxia was not at court today. Her husband, present as chancellor, informed me that she has been feeling ill.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have sent for doctors to tend to her.

Calm and serenity reigns in Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There is peace, jobs, and good health for everybody!

My niece’s daughter’s course of education must be decided.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will have her educated at the court. If she carries even the slightest trace of Gagik’s abilities I will be glad to have her as a capable member of my court.

Mikayel, one of Gagik and Anastaso’s sons has aged enough to be sent for education.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I’ll have him educated at the court, like his sister.

With so much attention recently being placed on the Cherven children, their bastard brother has drawn the attention of some
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While he may be a bastard, he is a clever and shrewd boy… He’d have much potential if he carried better blood.

A miracle worker offered to heal Eudoxia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I urged her to take the offer. She needn’t worry of the money, no one would deny her a loan, being the daughter of the king and an important member of my court… but she declined, she indicated she would put her faith in god…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
To everyone’s surprise she awoke from a nap today completely free of her ills. I guess God does not hold my ill standing with the church against my kin…

I was discussing matters of the realm with Andronikos today when we came to the topic regarding the Archbishop of Rostov.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That man has an incredibly talented court! He is a rather… how shall I say… simple man himself, but with the assistance of his court the Archbishopric is a capable political force. I am glad to have an extremely loyal man like that in my realm. He has wealth, prestige, and the grace of God on his side—and he is my man.

Crude and unfair stories of me have spread near and far. They stem from my poor reputation.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Some people have the nerve to declare me not a proper knight!

I’ve decided to take action to stop Nikephoros, Anastaso’s bastard, from being alienated any further.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The boy is incredibly talented in all fields necessary to be a proper lord… Unfortunately that is not likely to ever happen. But, he will probably make a useful court member once he gets older. As such I want the kid to be free of the mockery he is being exposed to in my realm.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Danilo Rurikovich, a friend turned enemy turned friend, is still a potential thorn in my side. I might be able to mend my relations with him, or at least maintain them, by executing a gesture of trust by sending Nikephoros to him as a fosterling.
I’ll have Andronikos send the offer in a message today.

Danilo has accepted the boy as a fosterling.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We sent Nikephoros off to Vidin this morning. I just hope the act will remain one of sending a fosterling to a friend and not turn into me sending a ward to an enemy.

Considering your second-biggest problem is negative piety, killing the priest was probably a bad move. :P

But, you're the hero of the game, so I'm sure it will turn out ok in the end.

1161

I have been enjoying the prolonged peace and quiet that has spread throughout the Kingdom
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I, Lazaros Synadenos, am quite proud of my work. I have helped to turn my family’s social standing from insignificant to mighty. At age 46, I still have plenty of time to work my wonders.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfortunately I do not share a strong relationship with the Orthodox Church. An issue I am not happy with. I tried to do right with them, but the tides turned against me.
The eve of 1161 has brought some internal strife in my son’s demesne.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is staving off a pagan rebellion. A potentially dire situation, should the rebellion take hold… but, Dauid is going to need to learn this trade himself… he will be his brother’s bannerman when I pass and as such he needs to learn how to manage his own affairs.

By God that fool of a boy did not act in a timely manner
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lower Dniepr’s rebellious population when un-opposed for too long. A thug named Sugr has installed himself as a ruler of the people.
Dauid, the fool, was even in county with his army while the pagan put himself in charge and did not act to stop him.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I cannot have my hard work go to waste. The realm must not fracture. I am calling a meeting with my court to discuss options.

Since Dauid seems content letting a pagan thug command his lands, I must intervene and act for him.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have declared war on the traitor Sugr. I also sent message to my fool of a son that he is to mobilize his troops immediately and lead an attack against the rebels.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I’ll teach Dauid how to rule properly whether he wants it or not!

At least the boy had sense enough to accept my orders. He has mobilized his troops.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is leading the regiment north into Lower Dniepr himself.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The pagan Sugr has a mere 578 men. Dauid commands over fourteen hundred men. Even an idiot cannot fail this task.

A message came today informing me that Dauid has engaged the pagans in battle.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I now eagerly await word of the outcome of the battle.

After many days of silence form the east, news of Dauid’s victory over the pagan army arrived today
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Despite his vast numerical advantage he still lost over 200 men… Luckily the province is only commanded by hill fort, easily overwhelmed by Dauid’s remaining men.

The pagan Sugr has given Dauid battle, again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The fool just doesn’t know when he is beat. If Dauid has any sense in him when this is done and over and I’ve returned the province to him, he should hang a couple dozen local leaders for good measure.

The second engagement between Sugr and Dauid ended with no bloodshed. Sugr’s men fled the field in face of my son’s forces before the lines were properly arrayed. But, he returned a month later and gave battle.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Which he promptly lost.

And the rebel insurrection is done with.
Dauid took the local fort with ease.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A priest I sent over a couple days ago negotiated the province’s surrender for me following the fort’s fall.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They agreed to install me as the Count of Lower Dniepr. Realizing how vulnerable the province was, I also gave instruction for the local fortifications to be improved.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In just under three years Lower Dniepr will be properly guarded by a small castle. After which I may consider returning the province to my son, but recently I have doubted whether he is deserving of it…

Trpimir, Count of Ryazan, son of my late elder step-sister Theodote and my former trusted adviser Rad, is the definition of disloyalty incarnate.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is common knowledge that he hates me as a person and despises being under my rule.  He is rebellious and will likely become a serious problem in the near future.

Some of my vassals do not appreciate the laws of the realm.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Such insubordination reflects very poorly on me…  All of a sudden my year of peace and quiet is being interrupted by internal worries.

He has gone and done it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Trpimir has declared a hostile independence from the Kingdom of Serbia.
This is a most serious issue- one that I must take care to address properly. There are many factors at play that affect my decision making process. On one hand, I cannot have vassals breaking away at will and unpunished. My Kingdom would collapse faster than a rock falls. On the other hand, my heavy handed rule has spawned a very negative reputation for myself. My vassals possibly fear enough as is... If I can show my men that I am a reasonable man they may be more willing to work with me, under me. Surely they know that I have brought only glory and wealth to the Kingdom...
I must also remember that this is not the first time he has done this...
But, given all the factors I have decided to let this one go. To continue pursuing this problem will only bring more problems down the line.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have instructed my messengers to inform Trpimir that Ryazan is his- for a single payment of his entire treasury, that is. THis way I can consider it a business deal. I have offered to sell Ryazan.

Trpimir has accepted my peace proposal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully this will not spark a wave of similar rebellions across the realm.
Despite my generosity and infinite kindness my reputation remains rather bad, according to my court.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have instructed my advisors to send messages to all my vassals informing them that Trpimir's situation was unique- no one else should expect such kindness from me.

It is almost a relief to be pestered by the local burghers.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Too often am I dealing with serious internal strife or foreign wars. Dealing with a petty issue with the Belgrade burghers is a nice change of pace.

I have been informed that people view me as 'deceitful'. That was the word used.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am appalled. If I find out who is spreading such rumors I will be sure to make them regret their words.

Today I sat down with my court to go over the status of my vassals.
After the Trpimir incident I sent messengers to all of my vassals. The messengers have returned and delivered reports on each vassal's loyalty.
It seems Kuman, son of Tornik Tarchaneiotes who was wife to Kyriake, my step-brother Nephon's daughter is doing well in Padua and devotedly loyal to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is 35 and without issue.
Volodar Vojislavljevic, son of Radoslav and Prince of Dioclea is devotedly loyal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has one grown son, Vladislav, as well as another male child. Volodar is 35.
Tvrdoslav Vojislavljevic is devotedly loyal. He is brother-in-law to Volodar and Prince of Rashka.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is 34 with no grown sons. His eldest is 14 and has two legitimate brothers and one bastard brother.
Danilo Rurikovich, aged 37, is son of Vysheslav who is step-son of my brother Nephon.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Prince of Vidin is loyal to me, but the messenger suggests that his loyalty will wane over time- over a short period of time.
His eldest son is a 14 year old bastard. He has two other sons, the next eldest is 12.
My son, Xenophon, Prince of Karvuna, is devotedly loyal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is 30 with two young boys.
Dauid, the careless Count of Crimea, is devotedly loyal as well. He has more boys than I can count- I feel bad for his wife.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While my son is an extremely talents commander on the field of battle, I fear he is entirely unsuited for any sort of rule. Not that he lacks the necessary skills.... he just doesn't seem to care. Perhaps his 27 years are too few to instill that desire in him?
Kallinikos Telegdi, Archbishop of Rostov, is extremely loyal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is a weak man, aged 47, and dumb as a rock. The messenger indicates that his opinions of my are only going to get worse over time. Apparently my standing with the church is far from desirable for him.
Helene Vukasin, Countess of Smolensk and Moskva, is extremely loyal to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is unmarried and without issue. But at 29 she is still young enough to bear child, I suppose. Unfortunately my messenger indicates that she is not very happy with being associated with me. She may become a problem in the future.
I was delighted to hear how many loyal vassals I have- but I am also disappointed to hear of the ones that seem to be slipping into disfavor.

Volodar has passed Ragusa to his son.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vladislav just turned 16 and was granted the title Count by his father.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Good for him! I'll be sure to send him a message of congratulations.

Terrible news regarding my daughter.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Eudoxia seems to be possessed. I have heard some dare suggest that it is due to my poor relations with the church...
Given her current state, I cannot safely leave her as my spy master.
I've replaced her with a new lady, Eirene.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She comes from no notable family, but she is as skilled as anyone else left in my court.

1162

It is early 1162 and so far the state of the realm seems to be okay.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Kingdom of Serbia spans the width of northern Greece. I also have holdings in Padua, Crimea, and the Smolensk/Rostov regions. Not to mention Rashka’s inherited holding closer to the Baltic.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I feel like I have achieved much for my family in my 47 years of life.
But, some people do not appreciate the work I’ve done…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Danilo, as decided during last year’s analysis of vassals, has faltering loyalty.
I cannot have another rebellious vassal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have ordered a gift sent to him- a bribe- to keep him complacent.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully the money will keep him from doing anything he could come to regret.

Currently my demesne is one of Regal Supremacy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In light of recent issues regarding the loyalty of my vassals, I have decided to modify my laws to reflect the popular opinions of other realms and my vassals.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Kingdom of Serbia will now practice a proper Ecclesical Balance. I do this not for the unthankful church, but for the stability of my realm.

Anastaso’s boy Levon died today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He was four. The priests say it was God’s will. The doctor says he was a sickly child.

My daughter has challenged Kyranna’s ability as Steward.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vezhav claims to be far more suited to be steward.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I disagree; Kyranna is good enough, in fact better than her. I will not let my own daughter try and bully me like that. She has been stressed and has manipulated me in the past. I will not let her continue to do so, especially not regarding her step-mother.

Danilo, once again is stirring emotions of discontent in Vidin.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I’ve instructed Andronikos to keep a close eye on the situation so that we may react to any action Danilo make take in a timely and appropriate manner.

There has been a murder in the court!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kyranna, my dear wife, was found dead!!! No conclusive evidence pointed in any one direction, but Vezhav was the most likely perpetrator.
We know she was angry with Kyranna to the point that I could describe it as a rivalry. We know she challenged her in late April regarding her suitability as Steward. I loved my wife…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vezhav was obviously taken by the Devil. I had no choice but to have her executed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My step-son inherited Kyranna’s wealth and her position in the court.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is an intelligent man, but I feel as though he possibly blames me for his mother’s death.

Finally good news from Vidin!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems Danilo has sense enough to appreciate my wise and fair rule under feudal contract!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But, despite my kindness to him, he remains rather disloyal.

That swine of a bitch!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Eirene, the pathetic woman I took in and gave a role in my court has threatened to leave the demesne!
I sent her to the Belgrade castle prison- perhaps a few days of bread and water will show her the error of her ways!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Andronikos has suggested my actions might be interpreted as cruel and negatively affect my already rather bad reputation… So be it! None can be better than I!

Despite his disloyalty he still spreads words of appreciation regarding my rule.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I fear that Danilo is using such messages as a guise to cover up some other nefarious actions…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
For his loyalty is questionable and it is not likely getting any better. One of the larger issues, I've heard, is that Danilo dislikes me as an individual…
I’ve heard him describe me as chaste, energetic, selfish, deceitful, cruel, modest, trusting, cowardly, stubborn, celibate, and a tough soldier. The nerve!

Why can't we have sons like Micheal Bryennios?!

Last year was a horrible year. I lost both a daughter and my wife, I resorted to bribing vassals for their loyalty and my reputation remains in the pits.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Some have suggested I pray to find a course of action, but heading the will of the Church has gotten me nowhere so far.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I wish I had someone to go to for advice… if only my father lived and could tell me how to get out of this mess.

Foreign (and vassal) relations has been an issue for some time now. My reputation is causing tensions with my neighbors and even my own men. Currently Andronikos serves as my chancellor/
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His brother, Michael, serves as my steward.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While a skilled steward is very important, at the moment a skillful diplomat is more important.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have swapped their positions in my court. Michael is much better suited at chancellor than Andronikos was, and Andronikos is only slightly less masterful as steward than his brother. Hopefully my step-son can help to improve my relations with my vassals and other rulers.
Another action I’ve taken to help improve my reputation was to instruct Michael to formally grant the title Count of Crimea back to my son, Dauid.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully the actions I took today will bring an end to any talk of disloyalty…

Perhaps putting Andronikos in a position to deal with money was a mistake.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Presumably after tabulating how much wealth is in the treasury he has come to think he deserves some of it…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is thus far devotedly loyal to me, but I cannot have problems with the man in charge of my finances… I have decided to reward him generously.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Money has less value than capable people.

Eudoxia gave birth to a stillborn child today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It took much of my willpower to not suggest it was God punishing Andronikos for his selfishness last month. They have two other children, I am sure my daughter will be fine- which is good because I have other matters to attend to today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Helene Vukasin, the Countess of Smolensk, is very loyal at the moment, but my spies suggest her loyalty will wane over time.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I’ve instructed Michael to gather 100 gold from his brother and send it as a gift to the Countess.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Such a generous act on my part is sure to keep her happy for some time.

A messenger from Rashka arrived this morning.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Apparently Sudovia has initiated a war of independence.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Tvrdoslav, step-son of Radoslav, is devotedly loyal to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His son, Prvoslav, was apparently just given charge of Sudovia this year
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And already he has a mind to break away from his own father.
Sudovia is far from Rashka. I feel I can do Tvrdoslav a favor by aiding him in the war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Helene, Countess of Smolensk is near enough to Sudovia to take care of the problem quickly
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have instructed her to mobilize her levies under my banner. Smolensk’s proximity to Sudovia will bring an end to this issue quickly.

Helene has raised her troops.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Her marshal, Boris, will consolidate her regiments in Smolensk then march on toward Sudovia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My court was unsure of Prvoslav’s army size so I have instructed the Countess to send overwhelming force and to take no risks.

Word from Boris in Smolensk has arrived. His regiment has met up with the Moskva regiment and they are beginning their march on Sudovia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He expects to arrive within two months.

Another message from Boris arrived today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His force is nearing Sudovia. His scouts have reported the enemy to number around one and a half thousand strong. Boris will crush them- he outnumbers them by over 5 to 1.

Boris has arrived in Sudovia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He expects to force Prvoslav into battle very soon.

The expected news of victory from Boris arrived today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Countess of Smolensk’s marshal lost 150 men, while the rebel Sudovians lost over 700 men.

Prvoslav has sent an envoy begging for peace.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Does he not realize that forces under my banner have him trapped in his castle? Why would I ever grant him a white peace?

Excellent, the mess in Sudovia is near over.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Boris stormed the castle and liberated the province. I don’t even need to broker the final peace- it seems Prvoslav has submitted to his father and returned the title Count of Sudovia without my forcing him to.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That is for the best. Now I do not need to further damage my reputation by forcing peace on the boy.
Kallinikos, despite my merciful treatment of Prvoslav, is still a thorn in my side
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His view of me is declining. My reputation and my piety cause him great concern…
I’ve instructed Andronikos to alleviate that concern with 100 gold.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Michael believes the act will surely improve the Archbishop’s loyalty.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

At least Tvrdoslav can appreciate my rule.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He remains devotedly loyal to me. As such, I will remain loyal to him. Should his fool of a son attempt to break away again, I will once again act on Tvrdoslav’s behalf. I cannot blame him too much for reinstating his previously traitorous son as Count… I have, technically, done similar with my son, Dauid.

My non-confrontational personality has made my peers question my claims.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I care not. Well, I do care… But by putting the image of not-caring out, I may help to bolster my reputation… Or at least not hurt it…

Anastaso and Gagik’s girl Milka has matured.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is quite the judge.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Each year I like to reflect upon the happenings of the year past and my hopes for the year to come. I tire of regretful happenings and worrisome hopes. I just want to live and rule as King without worry.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But, I suppose with a diverse and extended realm such things are impossible…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While I have achieved much and should be considered great- many do not believe so… My reputation remains rather bad and my piety is piss poor.
The world remains much the same.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Byzantium has reinforced its strength to the south. Croatia remains stable in the west. Hungary holds a centralized rule in the north. The Cumans are still huge to the east.
My entire realm, with the exception of Crimea and Lower Dniepr consists of an Orthodox population
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Lower Dniepr remains pagan and Crimea is one of two Jewish holdouts in the world… Dauid is a fool to not crush those faiths.

Naissus, the southern province of the Principality of Vidin, has been titled to Elisey Rurikovich.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Elisey is Danilo’s bastard. But even for a bastard the kid is talented.
Danilo, on the other hand, is a disloyal fool.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He will likely cause trouble for me sooner than later.

The Archbishop of Rostov is continues to express displeasure regarding being my vassal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is still rather loyal now, but that is more than likely to change if unaddressed soon.
I have instructed Michael and Andronikos to handle the situation, again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I hope God sees Kallinikos for the whore he is. Taking my money for service…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But, at least I can buy his loyalty… that is much more preferable than resorting to force.

The dreaded news has arrived.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Danilo has raised his troops and gone to war.
He commands twenty-seven hundred men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps he thinks I will decide that fighting him is not worth it and let him go like I did with Ryazan?
He is wrong.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will personally lead my Belgrade regiment against him.

While on march to Vidin a representative of some Pecheneg raiders have offered their service to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I declined it, not willing to spend money on troops I do not need.

A scout has reported to our column that Danilo has raised Elisey’s Naissus regiment.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He commands 1200 men. We are almost to Vidin and I expect to take on and defeat Danilo before the Naissus regiment can reinforce him.
The Pecheneg raiders have re-offered their services in light of the news.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But even with an additional regiment to face I am confident my Belgrade regiment will fare well enough without hiring mercenaries.

We have arrived in Vidin.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The standard pre-battle posturing is playing out in the fields below my encampment. The scouts report that Elisey has yet to break camp in Naissus.

Victory is ours!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not only did we crush Danilo, but my men have acknowledged my skills on the battlefield. I personally lead a charge into Danilo’s middle ranks. It was a most glorious fight.
We lost somewhere around 650 men while Danilo lost upwards of 1200 men. Still now reports of Elisey breaking camp in Naissus.

Danilo has sent an offer of white.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I did not march all this way to just let him go. The siege continues.

Danilo is apparently returning for more, from Naissus.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The scouts were not sure if both the Vidin and Naissus regiments were on the march or just the Vidin regiment.

Vidin has fallen to my forces.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Danilo was too late to break the siege. I demanded he install me as count of Vidin and Prince of Vidin.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With no home support, he was forced to accept my terms.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have also made it clear that he will not be returned to power… I am meeting with his bastard tomorrow to discuss his loyalties.

Elisey is very loyal to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has some issues with my reputation but nothing too serious. I did not put him on the spot and question whether he held in Naissus with his regiment on Danilo’s orders or if he did not want to fight me. I will not ruin our current relations on the past. Instead I noted that he did not march against me, and informed him I would be giving him his father’s titles.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I granted him the title Count of Vidin, much to his surprise, then made him prince of Vidin, which was beyond surprising to him.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He swore devote loyalty to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is a smart kid, and his loyalty will be important.
Unlike that whore Kallinikos:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He needed another ‘gift’ to maintain his allegiegance.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
By now Michael and Andronikos barely need instructions on how to proceed with those bribes- they practically take care of it on their own. If I didn’t think Kallinikos was too cheap, I’d think he was giving a kickback to the brothers.

The burghers in Belgrade are demanding social change.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
How dare they! I shall crush them!

The pagan populace have broken away from the Principality of Galich and formed the Chiefdom of Olvia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That is news to act upon. Right now Serbia is relatively stable and calm
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With Danilo no longer driving Vidin to doom, I can focus on the Kingdom’s more important affairs.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am thankful that the whole Vidin rebellion did not stress me out too much. I remain healthy even at 50 years of age.
Unfortunately I have other dissenting rulers to deal with
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Archbishop of Rostov, once a friend, has become a major problem in that region.
Countess Helene Vukasin of Smolensk is becoming a thorn in my side as well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is without issue, but still young enough that I must worry about her starting problems for many years yet.
My own son, Dauid, has been questioning my character recently as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It will be an embarrassing day when I resort to paying off my own kin like I do that whore Kallinikos.
My eldest son, Xenophon, is devotedly loyal, at least.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But despite that I have heard rumors that he is exhibiting rebellious tendencies…
The bastard Rurikovich, Elisey, that I raised to Danilo’s former post, is devotedly loyal to me as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is a capable man, one whom I believe will be a vassal to be proud of in the long run. But, he is still young- and young men often make big mistakes… We’ll see if he stays civil.
Tvrdoslav Vojislavljevic, Prince of Rashka, remains devotedly loyal as well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is obvious he is not a direct son of Radoslav…
Volodar Vojislavljevic, true son of Radoslav, is very loyal- but not to the unquestionable extend that his brother-in-law is.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Regardless, Michael, my chancellor, feels he will prove to be devotedly loyal in time. But, warns he shares the rebellious tendencies that my son has.
Finally, we have Kuman Tarchaneiotes, my niece’s son.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He remains devotedly loyal, but without issue.
Despite the questionable loyalties of some vassals, specifically the Whore of Rostov, I feel comfortable enough taking advantage of this Olvia situation.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I had Michael send a declaration of war to the pagans.

I was hoping to have one of my sons march under my banner to defeat the pagans, but it seems they have joined in my war and raised their levies under their own banners.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps I will leave this situation to them- see if my sons are real leaders.

Word from the east is that Dauid has sent one and a half thousand troops at Olvia by the Black Sea.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Reports also indicate he is leaving a home regiment in Lower Dniepr, to act as reserves.

My eldest, Xenophon, is a little late to the party.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has put around 2000 men to sea. He does not lead the men; rather he sent his Karvuna regiment.

My poor daughter Eudoxia…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I authorized her to be locked up for good. Her madness was becoming out of control and she needed to be put away before she hurt someone. Andronikos is far from happy.

If the reports are correct, Xenophon’s marshal is leading a siege against the fortifications in Olvia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am not sure if Dauid is on site or not…

Damned son!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Xenophon agreed to peace with the pagans. A peace worth one gold. That is all he received. Surely he spent dozens more just getting to Olvia… Fool of a son.

It seems my boys are not quite ready to understand the finer points of being a proper lord.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I received news that Dauid was sailing back to Crimea with his regiment. As such, I have raised my Turnu regiment, commanded by Basilakios, and ordered him to Olvia.

Anastaso’s bastard Nikephoros has fallen ill.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After things did not work out too well regarding his fostering, I feel a little badly for the boy now being faced with an illness.

Basilakios sent word that he has initiated a siege of Olvia’s defenses.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully this whole situation will be over with quickly.

Aba, Chief of Olvia, has offered peace with a tribute of 1 gold.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am not so simple as my son.

Excellent, the Turnu regiment made quick work of the siege and has captured the province.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Olvia is mine. Basilakos handled the province’s surrender personally under my authorization and instruction from prior to his departure.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Aba was forced surrender the province to me. Along with all his wealth, a mighty 3 gold.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Olvia, while not a great province to start, is ravaged and pathetic after the war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As such I also indicated Basilakos should initiate construction of a church as soon as the province was taken.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully the pagan population will find the true faith and convert, ending any future popular revolts.
Lastly, I am granting the province to my son, Dauid.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While I am not confident he deserves the land, much less can rule it properly- I have no desire to deal with the petty pagans myself.

Anastaso brought joyful news to me today
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nikephoros has recovered from his illness.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not only is the boy capable and skilled, but his body seems pretty resilient as well…

Once again, some have been questioning my claims.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
See if I care about Taron; I don’t even know where that is!

Michael told me the Whore of Rostov was acting up again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He and his brother already took care of him without my needing to instruct them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Normally such expenses would be shocking for a courtier to make without my direct instruction, but I am actually thankful that they handled it without my needing to be bothered…
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Despite the bribes, Kallinikos remains somewhat disloyal.
