While I do enjoy games that give tactical control of battles (total war, close combat, for example...) I find that grand scale strategy battles consisting of just watching two organization/strength/morale/whataver bars go down can be just as fun.
It gives you that feeling of I've done my best to prepare my army.... now our fate is in their hands.
For your sake, Dwarf, I hope your enemy is depleted as well- for I know all too well what its like to be victorious by a hair one moment, only to discover a new enemy army approaching on the horizon.

EDIT:
and gosh darn, this makes me really want to play my game!!!
I'll try and get a bit in tonight.

That's a positive... on the second statement :(

They are hell-bent on destroying me, they accept no peace proposals.
Even now, as further armies come puring in through the ocean, I've had my revenge.
His sons, both, are dead. Assassinated.
Also, he is 51, and his chances to get children, let alone a son, are slim.

(OT: Also, I'm allied with these Cyprus sons of bitches. How the hell do I move them to send me troops?!)

Do you guys know if there is any advantage to creating Dukes or Archbishops in my Kingdom? I have a bunch of Duke titles that I've gained over the course of the game, but I'm not sure what the benefit of giving the away are.

1. Well, with time, your realm will grow so large that you cannot rule all provinces by yourself. Thus, you need vassals.

2. If you mean vassalizing duchies instead of counties: IIRC, duchies give more prestige/month.

EDIT: Fuck yes. After setting aggresivity to Coward and difficulty to Very Easy, I made a truce with the sultan. Yes, his sons are dead and his dynasty will die and I fell somewhat guilty of cheating, but I will LIVE!

As Dwarf said, Dukes give you more prestige.
I also find duchies to be stronger and thus better able to defend themselves. Suppose a Muslim wars  your vassal count. If the Muslim is powerful they may be able to take your vassal's county quickly, before you can get an army nearby... BUT, suppose that county is part of a duchy. The Duke will be able to raise local troops and fight with greater strength, defending the county better, while you move your supporting army (if necessary at all) in to help.
Also, its easier to manage 10 Duke vassals than 50 Count vassals:-)

Aggression should have been that to start. Game is screwy if its high. Its not cheating, its just not letting the game break itself:-)

Really? Had it at 'Normal' or 'Weakling' before.

Also, Georgia is good fun during the third crusade. You're kind of alone in a sea of muslims, waiting to be conquered. Although I've got a 'Rather Bad' reputation now... how can I fix that?

This is quoted from the paradox forums
Quote
Given that I tried to make some systematic observations on BB and that I got some feedback on a list I posted in another thread, I thought it might be a good idea to start a BB list.

Things that give BB:
grab a title: 1BB
usurp a title: 0BB
take a title in an offensive war: 2BB
take a title in a defensive war: 1BB
a discovered assassination attempted: 1BB
a discovered assassination attempted against another ruler: 2BB
revoke a count title: 1BB
revoke a duke title: 0.75BB
force someone to yield a claim: 0BB
diplomatic vassalization: 0.75BB per province hold by the target directly, not including vassals
sneak attack, i.e. DOW while troops are in enemies territory: 2BB,does not apply to religious enemies

Things that reduce BB:
grant a title: -0.5BB
create a bishopric*: 0BB, but you get the piety boost for indirect BB reduction
a successful assassination in your court: -1BB (this no longer is true for Deus Vult)
give up a title in a war: 0BB, but you get a claim on the title
yield a claim in a war: -1BB

Given that my observations are on very hard, and Byakhiam confirmed some numbers for normal, I assume that the difficult level has no influence on BB from these actions. However, BB reduction over time depends on the difficult level and piety. The formula can be found here.
Also, you loose 1/3 BB when your character dies.

There is a one-to-one relationship between BB and the Monthly Vassal Loyalty Loss (MVLL), but it is not one-for-one. Your vassals will loose 0.4*BB loyalty per month, so here is how the actions given above affect the reputation modifier:

Impact on reputation modifier of vassal loyalty (bad):
grab a title: 0.4MVLL
usurp a title: 0MVLL
take a title in an offensive war: 0.8MVLL
take a title in a defensive war: 0.4MVLL
a discovered assassination attempted: 0.4MVLL
a discovered assassination attempted against another ruler: 0.8MVLL
revoke a count title: 0.4MVLL
revoke a duke title: 0.3MVLL
force someone to yield a claim: 0MVLL
diplomatic vassalization: 0.3MVLL per province hold by the target directly, not including vassals
sneak attack, i.e. DOW while troops are in enemies territory: 0.8MVLL, does not apply to religious enemies

Impact on reputation modifier of vassal loyalty (good):
grant a title: -0.2MVLL
create a bishopric*: 0MVLL
a successful assassination in your court: -0.4MVLL
give up a title in a war: MVLL
yield a claim in a war: -0.4MVLL

* Creating a bishopric does not reduce BB but gives a piety bonus. Granting additional titles to a bishop does not give piety, but the usual BB bonus. Revoking a title from an (Arch-)bishop does cost piety and BB for ALL titles of the bishop.

0 BB = We have an honourable reputation
1-2 BB = We have a respectable reputation
3-5 BB = We have a slightly tarnished reputation
6-10 BB = We have a tarnished reputation
11-15 BB = We have a rather bad reputation
16-20 BB = We have a very bad reputation
21-25 BB = We have an extremly bad reputation
26-30 BB = We are dishonourable scum
30+ BB = We are worse than Dishonourable scum

...snip...
Thank you. I can't access the paradox forums during the day and I never think to at night... this list is a great resource.
Thats what I love about the paradox forums, literally everything you need to or want to know can be asked for and come up with, if it is not there already...

EDIT:
Really? Had it at 'Normal' or 'Weakling' before.
Weakling or Coward is fine... but anything higher and the AI acts stupid. They just war each other too much, destroying themselves. It makes it easier for the player to swallow the weak war torn enemies up, but also silly because other countries are declaring silly wars on you and refusing truly reasonable peace offers.
It is pretty standard to play coward or weakling for a 'good' game experience.

Eh, I think my game is bugged, I decided to participate in the latest crusade and took the province they wanted, but it still says we need to "liberate the province from the heathens". Do I need to succesfully convert the population or what? I'm a russian orthodox king.

Odd, I thought I wasn't supposed to get a OMG CRUSADE banner when them popelings were out butchering muslims. I guess its okay for me to declare war on the papal state then :o

I didn't think orthodox christians could create/grant bishop/archbishop titles. Eh, these silly religious people and their shenaningas.

Declaring war on the papal state is, most of the time, a bad idea. Because it's got a veritable army of popelings who will be very pissed.

Meh... the only issue I've ever had is the annoyance of controlling and owning Rome... Then every year or so you get an event along the lines of:
Give up Rome for the Papal State?
Yes - Papal State created in Rome
No - Lose a lot of piety

or something like that.

Same goes for owning the area that Templars and/or Hospitaliers spawn in... pain in my arse.

I too am trying to figure out how to end a crusade. My dynasty are dutch Catholics, so there isn't much of a problem in that department. I decided to send my armies (in retrospect I sent a lot more than was necessary) to Byzantium to expell the Seljuk Turks (who are extremely powerful at this point in my game). I diverted most of my troops to the south of his lands and picked off a bunch of his vassals (dragging my reputation through the mud in the process). Another 20k troops were headed for the crusade goal itself, which ended up being a fairly easy catch, the Turks have their hands full with other Crusaders. After capturing the province I pressed for peace, managing to get the Turks to scede control of the province. I've had it for around 3 years now, and in that time I managed to convert the province back to Christianity. But it is still the goal of a Crusade! Am I missing something?
