I think I may push west a little into Croatia.
I could say something about how Serbs are always trying to boss that area around so I might as well do the same but that may be a little offensive to some... oops. ::)

My manpower in my 'core' provinces is well into the high 20 thousands. I think I am over 50k total, right now, but I'm not entirely sure. With those numbers I think I can handle Croatia.
Byzantium is still a little too strong, I think. I bet I could wage a decent war against their border vassals and possibly walk away with gains, but several of them have claims on my stuff... So it would be risky.

Another decent option would be to spread a bit north east into the Pechenegs again... Yep, remember those guys from years and years ago? They are back again. It seems every time someone knocks them down in size, they manage to swallow up some more land and grow again. The only problem with them is I'd be dealing with some major religious tensions with the populace and cultural issues. Plus, I'd need to replace the Chiefs with Counts- knocking into my reputation.

Har! My son, Xenophon is 16. he is also infatuated with a girl in my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He can feel the love overtake him! The interesting part is that the girl, Joscella, is actually his cousin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is my sister's daughter

INCEST.
Things are becoming more realistic by the update.

What, do you hate him or something? That place has been nothing but trouble.

Tsh, thats nothing, there's actual incest going on if you look at the kingdom of aragon very early in the game, before they get overrun by muslims. The count of La Rioja is married to his sister.

Heh, firstly, cousins is hardly incest for the time ;) Cousins were getting married up until the 20th century in the US! (anyone know when that changed?)
Second: its only incest if they have a child *

*(I am completely aware that the act without a child is still incest, I am just defending the son's actions ;D)

But... regardless, I married him off to a Scottish Princess.

As for Karvuna being a cesspool and hive of trouble: yes...but... Ruling that rabble will help build the boy character! (I remember when my dad would tell me that anytime I had to do something hard or annoying... 'It'll build character' ... that and 'life isn't fair'... grrrr!)

I am itching to get another update in, but I haven't played in a while... just adopted a dog and been spending a lot of time with her. Things have settled down significantly though, so perhaps I'll be able to get some play in soon.

Technically, first cousin marriage was still considered incest at the time and illegal under church law; it still happened plenty, though, and exceptions to the law were allowed with a church dispensation, since it was helpful to keep lands in one piece in areas where inheritance was divided amongst the children (such as the Holy Roman Empire) or an alliance needed to be contracted using a marriage.

Falling in love with a cousin, though, is an entirely different matter (and one not considered to be all that connected to marriage back then).  That would have been looked down on very much...

I read this thread a couple night ago. It made me want to try the game out. Now I am hooked. I'm s'posed to be writing an essay, but crushing the Dutchy of Lower Lorraine seems much more important right now.  :D

I was a bit frustrated at first, I started out as a count and things were very slow and I had no idea what I was doing. After reading this thread and some others at the paradox site I kinda got the hang of it. Although some things are still a mystery to me. I've done quite well for myself, worked my way up from being the count of Frisia to being the Duke of Gelre with a decent amount of vassals. Some of my vassals proved to be disloyal; after they rebelled I been replaced them with my own bastards. They seem quite loyal, but after reading Shakespearean tragedies I can't help but think the bastards going to be trouble sooner or later.

I look forward to reading more of your LP, it's a fun game!

 ???

What sort of excuse would be needed to legalize incest? And why keep the law if you can have numerous exceptions to said law?

I look forward to writing more, too...
but I just adopted a dog that has some potty problems, so I need to treat it like a puppy and keep it in my sights or in the kennel 24/7... that basically cuts me off from my gaming...  :-\
This snow we got doesn't help, either. Its hard to teach pee on grass, not on carpet, when there is no grass :-[

What sort of excuse would be needed to legalize incest?

What Mr.Person said, that or "I'm the King of Spain, let me have sex with my niece or I'll send in my armies to install a new Pope."  Though, to be fair, it was more likely that such threats weren't needed, if nothing else than because the Pope didn't have any reason not to grant it, it was simply expected.  Thus why, in this game, you don't need to bug the Pope to grant one, it's assumed he* will.

For all those 98% of people who weren't powerful enough to bribe or force in an exception, of course.

*Or she.  Yes, due to a fun bug (which may or may not have been fixed in DV, I haven't checked) it's entirely possible, if rare, to have a female Pope.

Well, there was one once, and then they started a ritual where the new Pope is carried over the heads of the Cardinals without wearing anything underneath his robe. The Cardinals then say, in Latin 'He has balls and is well hung.'

I'm not joking.

Wiki said that's an urban myth, Akigagak. Might have been invented to smear the papacy.

In a game where it is possible to have a Muslim Pope, I have doubts that that bug is indeed fixed.

Holy shit, that was epic.

I was playing the Kingdom of Georgia during the Third Crusade.
I was having lots of trouble with the Sultanate of Kawhakarizam, fending of smaller troop detachments of a few thousand troops.

Then, the main army came.
In the background, Northern Gate and Hear The Heathen Call by Tyr were hammering away, their lyrics quite fittings, as I assembled my final troops from all my province.
Resulting in two 15'000 men armies clashing at each other.
Barely, I was able to fend them off. My men were utterly demoralized, but stood firm, even as their last few hundred men charged with glorious honour.
My manpower has dropped to 1/3 of the original, but I think they are depleted.
