Well, if you attack a fellow vassal in your realm it makes sense for the king to go to war with you... its like when a brother hits his sister, will the mom just sit there and watch or do something about it? As King (or Duke) you want your vassals to be strong and support you- if they are killing each other that makes you weaker, so it makes sense to remove problematic vassals when they start internal wars.

Attacking a different realms vassal is a different situation. It may seem like the entire enemy country is turned against just you, but chances are your liege is actually int he war on your side as well. This is for the same reason as I list above, the King (or Duke) wants strong vassals, if you get destroyed in war you are weak, and therefore your liege is weaker. If you lose territory in war your king loses the territory as well... so your king will more often than not go to war on your side when you attack or get attacked. You can use this to your advantage if you are clever.

Alternatively, you may need to wait for the right opportunity to go to war. Wait for a vassal to break away from your king (or from a neighboring king)- then you can go to war with them for an easy fight.

My daughter Zoe is a mischievous blackguard
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is keeping the court on edge, especially after a naughty new years prank which I won't go into detail about...
The realm remains strong
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
including my son's new holdings in Crimea.
I remain strong
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am 36 years old but feel like I'm only 30! My family history has shown decent longevity, and I feel like my true calling (being a King) is still in its infancy.

Maximos' daughter, Anastaso, has come to my realm seeking a husband
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She already has a bastard spawned from between her legs, so I shan't try and put her with someone too prestigious
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ah, yes, my 61 year old steward will be a good match for the whor- err, the lady.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gagik is an excellent steward, hopefully he will appreciate this.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Considering all his previous spawn are dead, maybe he still has it in him to pop one out and continue his line.

Rad is visibly aging
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But he is still sharp int he mind, even at 51.

Excellent!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gagik, my steward, reports I am finally out of debt from the Crimea war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will spread the cheer by sending messengers to my vassals indicating they need not pay me a scutage tax anymore.

I have been rather busy recently dealing with various rather annoying 'duties' of being King
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
These interruptions are beginning to take their toll on me- stressing me out.

Vezhav has turned out to be quite the scholarly theologian
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If only the church could have instilled some proper Greek heritage into her...

Zoe is a baddass. Go her, pushing feminism in a world where she could be executed as a heretic for doing so!

Marry her to a total pushover.

Here is something awesome. I spent quite a while on this, so hopefully at least someone will find it interesting:
The Synadenos Family Tree
(You may need to run it in Internet Explorer, I could not get it to open properly in Chrome- please let me know if it works or not for you because I can try to adjust it to make it work better- I did not test Firefox or any other browser)
I'd set the tree to show Life Dates at the bottom, too... (Select Life Dates from the dropdown associated with 'Show:') since I input the birth/death years for everyone.
Also, anyone labeled as "brother of John" or "Mother of Jane" simply means I stopped keeping track of that branch there. That person may have kids, wives, parents etc that i do not list.

I found some crazy stuff out- like, Gagik Cherven, my old man steward I married Anastaso to happens to be my Uncle...
So in detail:
Anastaso is my half-brother's daughter. My dad's (Nikiphoros) previous wife, Ide, yielded several sons including Maximos (born 1110). Maximos spawned Anastaso in 1127. So Anastaso is my half-niece.
Gagik is my mom's (Irina) brother, born in 1089.
So Gagik married the granddaughter of his brother-in-law. I think...
Funny stuff.

EDIT: eh, it runs fine in Chrome now... so... I dunno.
EDIT2: the family tree is current as of January 1152.

A glorious year to be alive!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am not sure why this year will be great, but I have a feeling deep inside me that great things will come! That, and I have been int he brandy stock today. Alcohol is proof that God loves you! I will forever be known for that quote- I declare it now!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am extra thankful for being in such good health at my age. I recently had my clerks prepare a family tree for me so I could evaluate the longevity of my bloodline.
Now, we could never expect me to go through my bloodline to determine longevity, so my clerks are happily busy doing so on their own... I, on the other hand, have greater plans...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
War plans!
The Chiefdom of Lower Dniepr borders my son's province, Crimea. The chief is an insolent pagan fool who has no right or reason to be alive. I plan to fix that.
I politely send the Chief, Kotyan, a notice of my intend to kill him. And take his lands.
Rudolf, my marshal, raises the levies in Turnu
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I grant him permission to spend 236.5 gold on transportation costs to get the army to Lower Dniepr.

It seems Dauid wants some fame in combat
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My boy has war'd the pagan scum as well. Unfortunately his forces are severely outnumbered.

Rudolf has sent message that his army arrived at Lower Dniepr
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Duid's Crimea is being sieged by the turd sucking pagan. I will not stand for such offenses against my own kin.

Luckily Rudolf was able to force Lower Dniepr to surrender before Dauid gave in in Crimea
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I demand Kotyan, Chief of Lower Dniepr to install me, Lazaros King of Serbia, as Count of Lower Dniepr
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kotyan had no choice but to accept
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfortunately, as a part of the negotiation I was not able to kill the pagan myself (well, by Rudolf my marshal's hand, that is).
Rad has informed me that my holdings in the Crimea area may entitle me to a new claim of a Principality
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Should I expand my influence int he area, I may be able to convince the local rabble to install me as Prince of Crimea, which I could then bestow upon my son, Dauid.

Ahah, it seems I have an opportunity to get rid of Anastaso's bastard son
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Anastaso is Maximos' daughter, the one I recently married off to my uncle, Gagik
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gagik is an old man, he has no care or worry of the bastard- I doubt he will cause any trouble
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and should he int he future... there will be ways to handle him.

Gah! Rad has informed me that my non-confrontational stance towards the rebel Karnten has made my peers question my claim ont he province!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will not forget that claim... I am King now, I will not let Rad convince me to let go of the claim anymore...

Pagans in Lower Dniepr want to celebrate some phony feast day
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I forbid it! I will not stand for false worship in my realm.

It seems the pagans in Lower Dniepr are unhappy with my heavy handed rule regarding their phony religious beliefs
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No worry- I have the local barons hang some of the rabble.

My daughter Eudoxia is a stubborn egoistical rapscallion
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oh how wonderful the world would be without women...

I've lost Zeta
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My vassal Vasilije, son of Radoslav (the phony Prince of Dioclea), has died.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Being without son, his holdings passed to his father, Radoslav. That is very annoying...

Hmm, my Patriarch appointed chaplain's religious views are conflicting with official dogma...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and Count Volodar of Ragusa proposes to send a fosterling to me.
Ragusa is located south of Belgrade
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Count is loyal; I will accept his fosterling
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I promise to teach her how to be a proper lady... well, I won't teach her- I'll leave it to my nannies.

Rudolf, my marshal has vowed to not let the little things get to him anymore, this year
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is visibly less stressed; a very good thing.
I will need my marshal to remain capable for we are merely one fish surrounded by sharks
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Serbia is neighbored by Croatia to the west, Hungary to the north, an upstart Principality in the northeast, and the embattled Byzantium to our south. While they are all Christian states, they still represent powerful forces in the game of regional politics.
But we must not forget our eastern frontier provinces (ruled by my son) and our far northeast holdings. THey are surrounded by pockets of Christian, Pagan, and Heathan states as well as a mighty heathan empire to the east.
I, King of Serbia, Prince of Rashka, Wallachia, Vidin, and Samos, Count of Belgrade, Turnu, Severin, and Lower Dniepr, am 38 years old and in decent health.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have two strong grown sons, each ruling lands of their own as well as a near grown boy.

Well, it seems Rudolf will need not worry about ever stressing again
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He died in his sleep last night...
I have appointed a new marshal, Ludwig del Antelminelli
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is capable and carries with him military experience from the Germanic region.
My court members augment my own skills well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unfortunately many members of my court are rather elderly, in fact all are of the generation before me...

Very interesting... Rad has informed me that Michael, my step-son has suddenly began acting... normal...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems that he is actually quite a bit smarter than I first thought
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is starting to make himself useful in the realm...

My mother is fallen ill
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is 61, quite old but still capable as my spy master. Aside from her brother, my uncle Gagik, I am the only family she has left. My brother and sisters are dead, my father is dead, her sister and one brother is dead... I fear that soon, with her failing health, she will join the family.

Ludwig died today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He served a short stint as my marshal, but otherwise died poor and alone.
Michael, my step-son will take Ludwig’s place as marshal
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is by no means a martial expert, but he is the best I’ve got available, and he is partially family. Kyranna, his mother and my wife, wanted me to give him land, like his brothers. Given his mental background, I’d like to avoid that. He’ll do as marshal for now.

The ungrateful swine!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
How dare he come to me with that attitude! It seems his mother’s ideas of being a count got into his head. Good riddance!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He ends up finding refuge as a courtier in Hellas, at the southern tip of Byzantium...
With no other choice, I appoint Michael’s younger brother, Andronikos as marshal.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is an incompetent fool when it comes to the job, but I have no other...

Lower Dniepr has been causing trouble, it seems they are not very grateful for my freeing them from a pagan ruler
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I order the local nobles to round up a number of the rabble and have them hanged.

More trouble from Lower Dniepr
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Do they think I will run out of nooses?

Theodoretos, my patriarch appointed Diocese Bishop feels that I have strayed from the True Faith and has left my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am disappointed. I am also without a Bishop
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...again.

I have granted Lower Dniepr to my son as a Christmas in July present
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I originally held the province myself to test the regional waters, so to speak- to see whether the realm’s presence would ignite conflict with neighboring heathens. Experiencing only local unrest, I feel it is safe to hand the lands off to Dauid.

I believe the departure of our Bishop has disheartened my wife
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kyranna has been spending quite a few days with a number of local deacons, reflecting upon her life.

It seems news got out about Anastaso’s bastard boy
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Society frowns upon bastards...

Radoslav Vojislavljevic...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is the phony Prince of Dioclea. He has been a thorn in my side my entire life. We’ve subjected his son’s into the Serbian domain, but Radoslav remains defiant. He tries to project an image of authority among the people, claiming his Serbian blood suits him better for the lands than my Greek heritage. Nonsense. I am King of Serbia. I am (the rightful) Prince of Dioclea.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I instruct my mother, my spy master, to take care of him. With Radoslav out of the way, his son, my vassal, will inherit and he will be much easier to control.
Except...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My dear mother’s agents failed. She sent two condemned poachers to kill him while he was hawking. But it seems they were caught and revealed their origin and purpose. Rad is desperately trying to control the situation diplomatically. Without a Bishop, it is proving difficult to spin the situation with the church. My standing among peers was already sufficiently well off, so any hit to my prestige is easily absorbed, but my the Church is not receiving the news that I attempted to have an Orthodox Prince killed nearly as well as I’d like...

It cannot be... I... ...He acted so fast...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Radoslav Vojislavljevic retaliated and had my son, Macbeatha, killed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Macbeatha, my son... my son. Radoslav killed my SON...
He was nearly a man. But still a boy... An innocent boy. ... ... ...
The anger swelling inside me keeps the tears at bay. There is one word in my mind, and that word is V I O L E N C E
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send the message of war before even summoning my marshal
It seems Radoslav knew I discovered the origin of his assassin, he had his levies ready to be mobilized
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His marshal, Vuk, commands the 5900 strong Hum Regiment
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Radoslav himself commands the weaker 3700 man Zeta Regiment. I will destroy both.
I mobilize my demesne.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am eager to see Radoslav in battle, and personally command my Belgrade levies. The Belgrade Regiment is 8400 strong.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gagik, despite his age, eagerly volunteered to lead the Severin Regiment consisting of 4400 men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My marshal, my step-son Andronikos, leads the 3800 men of the Turnu Regiment.
Our combined force is in the range of 16-17,000. But I am concerned... Andronikos has no military experience or training, Gagik is old and likely uninspiring for his troops, and I am fueled by raw emotion... I fear we will lose more men than necessary to execute this grim task.
I make an opening move
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Unwilling to wait for the rest of my army, I march on Hum.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gagik and Andronikos head for Rashka, from which they can strike in any needed direction.

While on the warpath I hear news from home
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Zoe is, according to the nuns, entirely unsuited for church life.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is nearly a grown woman, it is much too late to change her education now... Even as a hermit she will eventually make converts. Regardless, I have not time to worry about these petty matters; I’ve reached the enemy.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My forces are heavily saturated with farmers and peasants, over 3500 of them. But I have over 1000 knights in my ranks while Vuk commands none.

I’ve appointed a new marshal from the battlefield.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A proper Greek from Belgrade named Demetrios has stood out in my forces and is much more skilled than my step-son.

We’ve been pushed back.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems my emotional battlefield management and the chaos associated with changing marshals has lead to disaster. Vuk, the petty marshal of Radoslav, has defeated me. While we inflicted more casualties on his men (2600) than he did to us (1400) it was not enough to keep my troops on the field. Vuk’s home court advantage and his soldiers’ purpose to fight won the day...
I am horribly shamed.

Despite an initial victory, Radoslav knows he cannot win the war
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has offered 866 gold for peace... Is my son worth 866 gold? A courtier yes, a grown man, yes... But my son being murdered by thugs cannot be washed clean with gold.
In fact, offering my gold is an insult. An insult I will not take lightly.
I will show Radoslav Vojislavljevic what happens when you insult me like that...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will have his own sons fight him...

I was sieging a province when a big army comes in to defend it. After defeating them VERY decisively, I continue sieging the province until the bar runs out... and the bar goes right back up to full, and I don't own the province. This continues three more times. Meanwhile the guy sends his army back to get trounced again, and I'm waiting to see if I'll ever get the province. Upon seeing the province's defender sending an army walking over the Mediterranean Sea, I decide it's time to reload a recent autosave.

That battle from earlier happens again, only this time I get defeated VERY decisively. Weird. Anyways, the guy sends his army back to defend against my ally also attacking him, so I get another chance to siege the province again. And of course, I can't take it. It just keeps refilling itself.

Any idea what's going on?

I spent the new year in an organized retreat back to Belgrade. But despite the embarrassing situation, I am happy. I am happy because Radoslav's sons have responded to my demands of mobilization. Both Volodar and Predislav have agreed to mobilize their troops to battle their own father.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oh, and Radoslav has also begged for peace once more. A peace he will not receive.
Admittedly it is difficult to pass up such generous peace offers. My coffers are empty and I have taken loans from multiple Belgrade money lenders.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But such sacrifices are necessary.
Although my Belgrade regiment is out of the fight for the time being, my other forces are moving into position for a new offensive.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have nearly 18,000 men mobilized.

Gagik and Predislav have 4429 men between the two of them in Rashka.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Radoslav has thirty-seven hundred men in Zeta.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I order Gagik to engage and crush Radoslav's Zeta regiment.

Radoslav's Hum regiment, commanded by Vuk has pursued me into Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We give them battle. While I have over twice his number, my men are disorganized.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With Vuk and the Hum regiment in Belgrade, I have Volodar and Androniko march their regiments into Hum from Ragusa and Vidin, respectively.
Hopefully we can trap and destroy Vuk in Belgrade.

Battle, glorious battle. The stuff that heroes are made from.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
One such hero has proved himself while engaging the enemy in Belgrade.

A message arrived from Belgrade castle today.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've been asked to take an itinerant bishop into my court, a request I gladly accept and grant. I've also received an update of my financial situation. My steward estimates that I will owe over 200 gold in wages and other costs this month... A dire amount given my already negative financial situation.
At least I have a new Diocese Bishop int he court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
May Michael Serblias bring the grace of god upon me.

The grace of god my arse!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We've been routed in Belgrade. Vuk's minuscule force has turned my army. We took light casualties, but many of my men fled the field early, giving Vuk an easy morale advantage.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We've corralled the men we could and started west. Hopefully we can re-organize and break Vuk in Belgrade soon.

Predislav and Gagik have arrived in Zeta.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems Gagik has deferred command to Predislav for the battle. I am not sure whether I completely agree with that decision or not, but that is of little matter now.
A messenger indicated that Radoslav has around 3700 men while my Severin regiment and Rashka regiment have a combined 6000 men.
Vuk has taken to sieging Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've sent for Volodar and Androniko abandon Hum for the time being and march back to Belgrade to relieve the castle.

I have arrived in Rama.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have 6700 men with me, but they are dispirited. I will hold my position for some time and let my men rest.
Reports have managed to break Vuk's seige and get to me from belgrade castle
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They are running low on food and supplies and request relief as soon as possible. I have my Turnu and Ragusa regiments on the way...

Excellent news from Zeta!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That prick Radoslav has been defeated! It seems Gagik made no mistake giving Predislav command of the army.
They indicate they are preparing to lay siege to the main Zeta stronghold and city.

We've been camped in Rama for six days now. Staying still has afforded my messengers easy access to me, though.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Volodar has arrived in Belgrade. I eagerly await news of Vuk's utter defeat.

It has been 7 days since I last heard from Belgrade. While I want to know how my troops fare there, I cannot sit idle in Rama any longer.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am marching my regiment to Hum.

At first I thought it was a horrible April Fool's joke.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But the seriousness of the message soon became apparent. Volodar was defeated in Belgrade. Vuk has resumed his siege of Belgrade castle.
I've redirected my march to Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Let's see Vuk's weakened force win round two against me...

A message from Gagik informed me that Predislav's siege of Zeta is going well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
but scouts also found Radoslav's army has regrouped in the south and is marching back to Zeta.

Vuk has fled Belgrade with his tail between his legs!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His regiment did not even stand to fight! The goat fucking pig has fled, leaving his honor behind!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vuk is pulling back toward Hum. I am not even taking a day to visit the castle, much less rest in Belgrade. I am marching after Vuk into Hum.

Radoslav has arrived in Zeta
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Gagik has resumed command of Severin regiment and Rashka regiment and engaged the Zeta regiment. The message did not indicate why Predislav is no longer in command.

As I expected, Gagik has destroyed Radoslav's army.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and I mean destroyed.

(1154 to be con't)

I've actually had this material and many more years played out since before I made my last update long ago...
but then some issues came up with my image hosting and then I got into other games and had trouble coming back and writing about stuff I had not played in a long time. I had/have no intent to drop this. Thats partially why I wrote up this quick update, just to be sure I keep going. But, I am getting a little too tipsy to write reliably anymore, so Ima continue later.
