"... Okay. I'll help you get it back. Do you have any idea where it is being held and why?"

To group: "There's still something up. Why is it an artifact?"

Anyhow, into the cave!

As the elder walks back the Mayor starts talking again.

M: "While I don't know the exact location I do know that it is the Mayor of That Village that has it. He must've hired mercenaries to steal it, I just know it. The reason they've stolen it is because of a feud we've had over the past 100 years. They claim that they are This Village and that we are That Village. Well, we will show them. Oh yes, we will show them.
Why it is an artifact is simple. Akahan Frener had a fey mood."

The farmers start to get more restless and the mayor decides to end the discussion. He nod to one of the farmers that is carrying a sack. The farmer place the sack on the dirt road infront of the group and then they all starts to leave.

M: "Inside the bag you might find some useful items that will help you on your mission. The only thing left to do is to sign this paper."

The mayor pulls out three pieces of papers and hand it over to you.

You all read it through.

[paper]
I, <insert name>, a <insert race> will find and return the statuette known as "Akahan Frener's Statue".

[/paper]

Most likely.

"I, Roger, a human, will find and return the statuette known as "Akahan Frener's Statue."

I practice my forgery skill, altering my handwriting.

...

What? Frederick XIV is chaotic neutral. 'Sides. If they grow suspicious, we will know that they are lying, and can kill them.

No, wait, even better. I mark it with an 'x' as though I am illiterate.

Hmm. That won't work either. I really don't want to sign this thing, and I see no reason to sign a piece of paper stating that I will do something that is likely to be suicide.

...

Hey, maybe they're spies form That Village, trying to lure people into a trap, with soldiers lurking just out of eyesight?

What am I missing? And what if they have the powers to bind us with this agreement, magically forcing us to do their bidding or lose our very souls?

If he had put hidden text in the paper I would have to give him maad props. That would be awesome, so awesome.

But years of playing D&D would make me leery of signing anything. In case they have exactly one piece of magic and that is the ability to write magic contracts.

After a long 30 seconds of thought, I am with Leo.

Webadict, why do you want us to sign it? Are you scum aligned with them, trying to trick us into signing away our freedom as guards from That Village pop up and slaughter us for conspiring against them?

Edit: Anyone up for just grabbing the loot and running?

Soldiers from That Village certainly would be able to steal a replica statuette and would know the history. And they're the very scum who would pull such a dastardly scheme.

That Village.
The kind of place you would never vacation to.

Because it says we have to return the artifact.

It does NOT say to whom.

Cave Crawl, experimental. Turn 0.75: The paper
« Reply #59 on: February 12, 2010, 05:06:50 am »

The mayor see the suspicion in the groups eyes.

M: "I know this seem a bit strange but I can assure you that there is no trickery behind this.
See, we traded some of these papers from a merchant which claimed it was magical. At first we were suspicious, but the merchant did explain that the paper was made from a special tree called Vivre. Paper made from this tree had three interesting properties, a small piece torn from a larger main piece of Vivre paper can track each other. It was also demonstrated that it was fire proof and water proof. The merchant also went on saying that a drop of blood of oneself would make it possible to show in a crude way how healthy that person was. This he demonstrated on a hen. A drop of blood from the hen was put on the paper in which the paper started to singe. He went further and broke the neck of the hen. In a puff of flame the paper was gone and the hen was clearly dead.
Why I want you to sign this paper is just so that it is possible for others to follow you should you die."

OOC: TL; DR: This will only make it easier for other players to home in to you should anyone of you die. You of course can just take the loot and make a run for it. Or, it's a way for them to locate you easier and then assassinate you when you least expect it. :P
