Braid
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:13:47 pm »

So I recently picked up this game and have been loving it so far, however I am stuck on one level. I swear to god I am doing it right but I don't want to check a walkthrough because so far I've done everything on my own and if I am doing it totally wrong I want to work out the right answer for myself. So can someone who has done it please look at the following plan to see if it is correct, it almost works but I never quite make it onto the platform instead kind of slipping off.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also feel free to discuss any aspect of the game here. It's awesome and I recommend everyone go out and buy it. NOW.

That time-traveling nuclear scientist looks...pretty boring. Ugly even.

Love this game, I don't remember the puzzle, but if you tell me what section it's in I can check a guide to tell you that you are doing it wrong.

Keep trying, the answer tends to come to you and then you are like AHA ITS SO EASY!... so fulfilling

It's the last world second from last area. And yeh most of the solutions so far have been like that but this one has me stumped, I can get so close to it that I'm having trouble thinking other than "WHY WONT THIS WORK?!?!?!?" *hissy fit*

Yes but I don't want to watch that in case he doesn't do it the way I am. Essentially I want to know if I have the right idea and am failing because I'm timing it wrong or something similar or if I have completely the wrong idea and need to rethink it.

You got it right; it just sucks. You can probably try dropping the time ring right as you enter time again, but you should be able to get it like that with quick reflexes.

There were so many places in that game that made me want to bang my head against a wall. That may have been one of them, or not...they all kind of run together now.

You're sort of on the right track, but there's a slight improvement that'll make it easier. I was trying your method the first time I played, but I can't remember whether or not it worked right away.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

I HATED THAT LEVEL SO MUCH

I don't remember exactly what the solution is, but if your thought process is anything like mine, you have picked up on a red herring.  The REAL solution is VERY DIFFERENT from the natural approach that looks like it might work.  If the timing seems too hard...then start over, rethink it from scratch, and use your time-slowing-down-thing in a more creative way.  I think that level is *designed* to make you do it wrong.

Braid was a fun game, but it WAS very short...

NECRO!!!!

I bought this during the Steam sale when it was $2 and only played it now and man, I love it. Well... I loved the ending! The middle was very meh and draggy but it's probably because I played it in one sitting. Anyway, I saw quite a lot of people complaining about how difficult it is and really... man... you think this is difficult? Some people need to get their hands on Contra. Anyway, I did have some minor problems with the puzzles but I never actually got stuck at any of them.

But it's a great game. Will not be wasting my time trying to get the 8 stars (the fact that it takes 2 hours of doing nothing waiting for a cloud to move to get one of them is a testament to that) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the story in all its weirdness, especially when all the games I've played recently have stories like this:
1. Take gun, shoot, kill, oh mai god hero lol.
2. You are woken up by (mother / childhood friend / love) for (festival / birthday / coming-of-age) ... save the world.

And to the OP, if you still need help... though you probably don't, you solve that puzzle by:
1. flip switch to get platforms to move.
2. jump of platform that moves vertically and drop ring.
3. flip the switch again, then again when the platforms are back in their original positions.
4. you should have one platform on the other side.
5. pick up the ring, climb up and flip the switch to release the ladder.
6. run over and climb that ladder, then stand on the platform with the glowy parts so you aren't affected by time.
7. drop the ring, then reverse time until the ladder is almost all the way back up (but not completely).
8. jump and climb the ladder as it falls.

I both hate and love this game. I figured out a good deal of the puzzles myself, but whenever I had to look something up in a walkthrough, I always uttered "Wait, you can DO THAT?"

Time travelling is a major mindfuck.

Yeah ... I was stuck on the same level. You actually are doing it wrong - I was trying it for hours the same way. You really have to do it as on the video.

Yeh I figured it out eventually "on my own". A friend actually watched me and then said "You do realise you stay time immune for a little bit after you leave the platform?" I facepalmed and almost immediately did it correctly.

I played the game a few weeks ago and had fun. A few of the puzzles had me stumped though, so I watched the relevant parts of a Let's Play on Youtube.

There were about 3 puzzle pieces I couldn't get without watching the youtube thing. I feel ashamed, but the solutions seemed to obvious.
