If you go too far into the RP side, you pretty much get a murder mystery of the http://www.great-murder-mystery-games.com/a-dead-mans-chest.html variety.

Which are amazing fun, actually, but a lot more complicated than mafia and a lot more work to play (and, not incidentally, better suited to playing in person).

I have purchased a couple, though, and it might be interesting to tweak them a little bit and play them on the forum... but anyways, when the game is like Mafia it's hard to RP since we're already online in a forum with a minimal communication medium. Throw into the mix a game all about discovering straight-out deception, and it starts off extremely hard - RP would just muddle it further. On the other hand, RP can provide a good environment for similiar types of games that emphasize strategy and interaction more heavily than straight deception.

Does the A+ rank have any subjective qualifiers? Or is it just 1 prod and a sub?

-establishing a Good Old Boy system (The ranks are made Objectively, with the exception of the S rank which can still be lost in a heartbeat due to the objective parts of the rule)

Cobalt is correct.  The 'active and self-motivated' is more just a name than a requirement.  Sort of like saying "1 = Very likely, 3 = Neutral, 5 = Very Unlikely".

The trick to an RP mafia game is just to enforce that everyone has to RP. I've played a few of those over on the sluggy freelance board, and they work just fine. Lots of interesting RP without losing the scumhunting aspect of the game.

Eh, we could try that sometime, I guess.  You could also give people a chance to say something in their death flavour too.

I've always been pondering the idea of a RP  styles mafia game.  People would spend the day as usual in the same room, but at night would be able to travel from one room to another.  You'd be able to privately talk and interact with people in the same room as you, cops would travel to other people's rooms to investigate them, and mafia-though they would have it easier to sneak from one room to another-can only kill those they can find. 

Of course, that means the gameplay would differ (i.e. there won't always be a nightkill) but if done right, it would be...interesting to say the least.

The tricky part of making any RP setup is that the folks here will do whatever it takes to try to break your system.  Like mr. "Vote one person then try to end the day 10 minutes after it starts"

To be true, I'm half tempted to work on it.  it seems not enough people want to play Christmas and SOME PEOPLE forgot that KotM is still in existence.

Hey, when I play Mafia I use everything I have at my disposal. >:[

The mentality I have about that is this:

The host should do whatever they need to in order for the game to not break (in the way they want)

The player should do whatever they are allowed to do in order to win, including breaking the game.


So if you do find a game breaking strategy, then it's not the fault of yourself, but of the host.

I like to put in pseudo-breaks. Breaks where it seems like everything's fine and dandy until the other team does something that makes your plans go horribly wrong.
