IT'S (a) CHRISTMAS!!! (songs thread)
« on: December 09, 2009, 05:12:56 pm »

I know it isn't technically Christmas yet but how about a Christmas songs thread, wherein we post our favourite christmas songs. This is inspired by me having gone to a LAN and found a Christmas album on the server, I proceeded to play through the album in audiosurf and have now been listening to Christmas songs all week.

Anyhow my all time favourite and a fond memory from my childhood is Grandma got run over by a reindeer. My local radio station would always play this round about Christmas, they'd always get it requested every morning in December as it ran up to Christmas so they'd say things like "We'll only play it if we can get 10 people requesting it in the next 5 minutes". Only the most ridiculous requirements would fail.

I'm also going to shove in Stop the Cavalry in my second spot. Even if it wasn't intended as a Christmas song.

Third place goes to Chiron Beta Prime. I'm a sucker for the JoCo

A New York Fairytale.

Hilarious. Also the dude with the disgusting teeth sings like Sylvester Stallone.

Specificly Christmas?

What child is this comes to mind, just because I'm a sucker for Greensleeves.

O come O come emanuel.

Honestly, modern day Christian 'rock' tends to be annoyingly upbeat, peppy, and dominated by boy bands. I'll go for any older stuff that isn't perfume and roses and uses an occasional diminished or minor chord.

Also a mention for Canticle of turning, even if it isn't really christmasy.

Yeah, Christian Rock is not a favorite of mine by any stretch.

I quite like O come O come Emanuel, but only really if it's sung by an all male choir, because it's just so much more powerful then.

I only like the Jingle Bell Rock. I don't know why, when I don't like all others.

The best Christmas song I've heard this year was a dude playing the accordian in the subway. My normal ba-hum-bug feelings towards Christmas music were transformed into the sudden urge to break out in dance.

A New York Fairytale.

Hilarious. Also the dude with the disgusting teeth sings like Sylvester Stallone.

Shane MacGowan got his teeth fixed not too long ago. I'm not sure what this means for the world.  :-\

Handel's Messiah.

there's the overture

The recording I have and listen to is the London Philharmonic and it's excellent. I also have on vinyl, the Phila. Orchestra and Mormon Tabernacle Choir which is supposed to be the classic recording. I'd definitely recommend the London Philharmonic.

How come nobody mentioned:

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi Trio

It's a tradition in my household to play this every Christmas; that, and Harry Connick Jr. (the older cd). Those, to me, are definitive classics that make the Christmas atmosphere.

When My Heart Finds Christmas - Harry Connick Jr.
 - Santa Claus (It Must've Been Ol'), among one of my favorites. I think this is remastered version, but it has all the same songs.
It's Christmas Time - Louis Armstrong/Frank Sinatra/Bing Crosby
Christmas with Sinatra and Friends - Various Artists/Sinatra
 - All time classic in the house.
Christmas with Johnny Mathis - Johnny Mathis
For Christmas - Johnny Mathis

And of course, you have others from way back when; I can't remember all the names yet. I think Frank Sinatra was on the list. Sinatra was definitely on the list.

Charlie Brown album samples (2006 edition, not '92)

EDIT:
Out of curiosity, I checked out the reviews with the 1 ranking (in the 2006 edition), and I would have to agree, get the older version ('92) of the album I linked to. The sound quality is too clean in the remasterd version. It doesn't carry that classic feel to it like the older version does. Plus the original versions of the songs sound better than the alternative. I'll look for it in the meantime.

Link replaced with the more classic 1992 edition. Can't go wrong with the classic.

FURTHER EDIT:
That's all I can think of. Enjoy these definitive classic albums.

;D Happy Christmas, and Merry New Year!!! ;D

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

You say these things, they confuse me.

And no, I don't usually pay attention to the words in the song, just 'listen' to them, if that makes sense.
