Also (depending on what mods you have, if any), make sure you start with a real axe instead of a halberd or something. I tried a human fort and the mod I had used halberds as the starting axe type weapon for the embark screen, but that didn't work for cutting trees apparently, or I did something wrong. So make sure all your starting equipment works right too.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

It's about the class, the skill used i guess. Halberds use spear skills IIRC, not axe. You could actually mod in any kind of thing, like a green blob, and just making it use the axe skill will make it cut trees just as good as normal axes.

I noticed that the starting axes for humans are 2 handers. So go into the military options of your woodcutters and switch them to "use 2 weapons" then it will work

It's

[CIV_CONTROLLABLE]

you probably miss spelled it. (that has been the problem with 99% of all my problems when modding)

Also in a side note. If you make a race that has 12 arms and three legs your pants and shirts will reflect the amount or arms/legs your creatures really posses.

Just realized that humans don't need alcohol  :P

Anyway to quickly build a well without an underground water source?

build a staircase down.
builda staircase up connecting to that
dig to river, except the line of tiles blockign the water
channel that.
channel 1 square in your fort or a safe place.
build a well on it

Just because humans don't NEED alcohol doesn't mean they won't enjoy having it on hand. It's even fairly authentic to the (apparent) time period.

Remember, the modern human is spoiled, what with his easy access to water that isn't full of parasites and heavy metals.

Proper humans should have lead or copper lined pipes (floor above and below with walls on the side of the tunnel bringing the water) feeding the well from your water source.  Otherwise a stone lined well into an aquifer would work.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I pretty much play as nothing but a custom, human-based race now, and I haven't encountered very many problems at all. Caravans still come, and they always have everything I need.

I had an Iron man civ once. Using greataxes for cutting trees was fun. Also, the iron man civs were always going to war with the elves. And winning. I'm guessing it was the [METAL_PREF] in their entity and the creature's (vanilla) [DAMBLOCK:12]
