I use Lemundes tileset:
http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Tileset_repository#Lemunde

combined with Maydays creature graphics.
Had to tweak around some to make the two work together, not sure exactly how i did it either, but a good thing with DF is that you can just backup the whole folder and it will play exactly as it did before when restoring it.

I've got one installation with Mayday, and two other computers with Winterwing's character set and Dystopian Rhetoric graphics set.

I've been thinking I may switch the Mayday installation over to the Winterwing/DR setup...I like the tile graphics, but as others have said, the random graphic bits in text is jarring.

Actually i have a question relating to mayday's title set...

its the keybidings...it took me quite a quite to get used to all the keys in DF and in mayday's aparently they are diferent....i first noticed that issue wen i tried to check the other levels in my area.

My question is , why are they diferent?

He used it before he uploaded it, so the init and keys are changed to his liking.
(He also removed the music, which sucks. I can't play Fortress mode without the music! D: )

I like Mayday's but I use Vanilla, too.

How exactly are they different? (Haven't played Vanilla in so long I don't even know!)

And yeah, agree on music thing. I went and redownloaded the vanilla just so I could copy over the music files, and it's the only music I play while playing the game, even though I have 80gigs of MP3s I could be running.

Well Asmodeus, for instance...if you wanna go up or down a level in vanila you either "shift + ." or "shift + ," and in mayday's i believe that "shift + ." dosen't do anything and "shift + ," pops up the "moving records" screen if i am not mistaken.

That would explain why my 3000x3000 tileset didn't end up working properly  ;D

I use Yayo's Oreslam.  Very clean, practically vanilla, and 20x20, so I can properly use my giant screen.

Really? I thought it was the angle-brackets in both of them. Or is it bound to BOTH the angle brackets AND shift-+ in the vanilla? Interesting tidbit of knowledge!

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Depends if you're using 40d12 or later, and what keyboard layout you have.

I use a slightly-modified version of vanilla.

I've changed the bed, cabinet, and chest icons to look like beds, cabinents, and chests (maybe a couple of others as well).  I've also pasted in the diagonal-walls graphics from one of the downloaded tile sets, but that's it.

I tried using various other graphics and tile sets (including making/editing my on), but got fed up with having to stare at the screen for several seconds whenever there was an ambush to work out what was attacking and how many there were.  A horde of coloured letters is a lot easier to spot and assess and make plans for.

(Also, I felt that a lot of the tiles that have multiple uses tend to make things uglier and more confusing when they are replaced with a graphic that looks a lot like one of the things they represent but nothing like the others.  Cheese/active pumps/certain rocks is a good example).

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.

I mean you cannot exceed displaying 200(or 250) tiles in either direction, including menus. :P

I use this usually:

640x300

But sometimes I use 800x600 when I want a larger view.
