World news by this comunity?
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:49:07 pm »

So, reading The Maguindanao Massacre thread got me thinking, I find  that geting reliable news can become increasingly hard, not form lack of information but from being drowned out by bullsh*t ones. So, my idea for this thread is that we who KNOW each other personally to be reliable as a community could post news and links to things happening nearby in this thread, like old-fashioned word-of-mouth except with global coverage.
So, if something happens nearby (not necessary in physical distance, could be cultural or some other kind or proximity as well) that you think people  all over the world  would want to know, post  it here.

Edit: fixed broken link.

The Maguindanao Massacre was extensively covered by every news agency.  If you miss news of that magnitude, you're probably looking in the wrong places.  Everyone who posts links here will just be getting them from Google News headlines anyway.

Not where I am.  People would have been talking about it.  You know, people I actually meet in person.  And they would have been talking about it a lot.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Maybe people just don't check the news so much anymore? I dunno.

I know my parents read news more thoroughly than I do, at least.  Much more.

It wasn't covered by news agencies "where you are"?  Agencies means the AP, Reuters, BBC and so on, who provide the majority of international reporting.  They all repeatedly covered this event.  Many news outlets selected this event for prominent publishing.  Your news sources, or your people's news sources, evidently chose not to.  So, I reiterate: you/they are looking in the wrong places.

I have to give Armok credit for suggesting what is possibly an even worse form of news distribution than the "blogosphere".

Seriously though, I don't think we should attempt to create a situation where we have to rely on a donationware ASCII games forum for our news, nor do I think it would be possible to begin with.

Sure, it's possible. But practical? Not really.

If you want news from around here... Shit, nothing happens in Huntsville. People die in tornadoes every year, but we're used to that.

Probably true, at least in my case, though I still manage to hear about the biggest events, I somehow missed that one.

One important thing, I think, is to not rely on local news stations/papers or cable TV news for, well, the news.

It pays to aggregate a variety of sources online and follow those.
