Screw fairness, I want to see two water players!

If we need fixed starts in order to do that (so E. Albright and Belac both have enough space to move), fine.

In regards to making up for lack of players, there's always the crude method:
Add an AI player.  Granted, the AI will be a pushover, but with the right nation, it might be able to hold territory for a water nation to conquer.
Example: AI takes giant nation, which proves difficult for land players to destroy.  Water nations enter with mages that spam frozen heart (which is more useful with less enemy combatants), and AI is cleared for the water nations.

Oh, and I'll take Eriu.  Don't know what I'll do with them, but neither does anyone else from the looks of the Dominions 3 board.  The lack total absense of death, astral, and blood magic is frightening.

Eriu is Man with weaker units and Vanheim-esque and Vanheim-quality commanders.  Get a strong Astral pretender with enough Death to summon spectres and you're ok.

I would rather not have an AI; if we only have 6, pick one starting land area and mod all its provinces nostart.

Actually Eriu never struck me as being Man - at all. No bows, no knights, and stealthless monks pretty much ruins any such comparison for me. More of a watered down Vanheim with only Air and Nature (well, okay, and trace Water and Earth). See e.g.

I'd prefer a placeholder AI to an empty space. Something annoying like Vanheim shouldn't be a total pushover in the earliest early game.

Well, that guide relates to Early Age Eriu, not Middle Age Eriu, although a lot of the same principles hold.

Actually, the guide is for MA (Eriu), not EA (Tir na n'Og). Given the overlap in troops and such it's perhaps not immediately evident, but there's one line stating they've only 2 non-capital mages; Tir na n'Og has 4. Still, the difficulty in telling which era the guide is for does a pretty good job of underlining its applicability to both.  ;)

What I meant about it being Man is that they both have A/N mages as their main magic, and identical basic infantry (although different elites).  Eriu's tuatha are definitely superior to Man's crones--whether that makes up for the weaker troops is unclear.  I like the Tuatha over the Vans--Nature has nice battle buffs.

I can't see Eriu's nicer mages outstripping Man's overall just given the fact that all those lovely Air mages are being paired with slingers and javelins rather than SMove-2 longbows. YMMV.

Likewise, nice as A/N might be in a fight, I'd still prefer Vanheim's path selection strategically. Not saying the Tuatha are undesirable, just that Vanheim has more stereotypically sexeh mages.

Of curiosity, how would the idea of using the Unique Gem Gens mod (which does exactly what it says on the tin) strike everyone? I've never been a huge fan of clam/stone/fetish farms, in that they've always seemed... cheesy, they add to micromanagement, and that they slant the game more and more to SCs over armies.

I'd be ok with that. Mostly because I never really use those anyway. Due to micromanagement hassle.

I think it would make less difference on a small map, but I am definitely in favor of this mod.

If we want to play without the gem generators, just go for the full on CBM 1.6.

It makes pretender design more fun by making more chassis competitive.  And generally only makes things cheaper, like spear wielding infantry, and spells easier to cast, giving the stuff you'd rarely use in Vanilla more playability.  With the exception of Flaming Arrows which I think gets bumped to the next highest research level and costs an extra gem to cast.

I'd be fine with CBM 1.6. FWIW.

So... I read through the thread twice and I still can't figure out if you actually need another land-based player. I'd be up for playing if you are, although I've never done multiplayer before. Otherwise I'll probably just lurk around and watch like I'm doing on the other thread  :P

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

To the best of my understanding, yes, there's room for another terrestrial.

So in theory we wanted to have everything figured out by tomorrow, right? I'll lay out the situ as best I understand it, and y'all can correct any misunderstandings I'm perpetuating.

Middle Era.

Bering, fixed starts.

CBM 1.6 (???)
