I could deal with Yalun-To or Europe.

If we're doing 3 waters, I'll take whichever of the remaining two our third marine "volunteer" doesn't want. If we're doing 2 waters (as e.g. fixed Yalun-To would require) I'll make a spot decision at the last minute.

Oceana or Atlantis...yuck (and what's the difference really?)

Belac was wise to chose R'lyeh.

The difference is fairly drastic, actually. Oceania has strong Nature magic, middling Water, mediocre Air, and trace Earth. Atlantis has extremely strong Water (it's possible to recruit Water-6 mages, though less that 1% of Kings will have it), middling Astral, and passable Earth and Fire. Atlantis has an easier earlier expansion underwater because of Lobster Riders, but is more tied to its capital as far as cheap research is concerned. Both beach passably, though Oceania has an edge as they get javelins, plus decent (though not remarkable) national troops from land forts. Atlantis also gets cheaper, weaker, quicker undersea forts. As far as line troops go, Oceania has recuperation, stealth, and better armor. Atlantis has poison, and their Holy-3 priests aren't aquatic-only like Bishop Fish. Atlantis has cheap scouts you can buy in any ocean fort; Oceania has expensive Sirens who need a lab but are obviously more versatile.

Overall, I'd say Atlantis will give you better magic, and faster undersea expansion. Oceania will take more time to get rolling, but will probably do better in the open air. Both can be interesting, though they lack R'lyeh's overt sexiness.

I'd file that under "better underwater expansion", though I suppose that's more "underwater dominance" than "expansion".

So the potential maps are:
Europe: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=44559
Yalun-To: http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showpost.php?p=614004&postcount=13
Bering: http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/system:bering
Hyborian: http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/system:hyboria
Pangaea: http://dom3maps.wikidot.com/system:pangaea

What do people think?

EDIT: I played around with some of these and here are my thoughts:

Yalun-To has weird border things on land, so many land nations would have to go into the water to fight each other.  I think it's unsuitable.
Pangaea has some weird borders between the inland seas and the outer ocean, making it better than it looks.  Whichever sea power is in the west can get to the lakes in the middle of Africa and Europe.  I think it's OK if we want to use it.
Europe, Bering, and Hyborian are pretty much what they look like, and all are usable.  Pangaea is marginally better than Hyborian.

I think we should choose between Europe, Bering, and Pangaea, or something not on the above list if people have suggestions.

That's a much bigger map.  I would be ok with that, but for 8 or so players it is quite large.

I'll vote Europe, I suppose.

I am casting my vote for Bering.  I have played other maps by the Pashadawg and they are consistently well balanced.  It is also specially designed for 7 players, 5 land and 2 sea, which is a good number for a Bay12 game.  And wraparound which I am fond of.

Here is the preview, in case the preview on the wiki link Belac posted wasn't working on your PC either.

Bering would be fine as well, since we're not doing funny victory conditions, even if I'm not a fan of fixed starts.

However... we're at 8 responses to the poll... does that mean we're at 8 players? That would point to Bering not working...

My vote's for Europe.  I hate fixed starts.  :P

Currently narrowing down the list of starting nations, will probably disclose after map selection.

By-the-by, we're going with stats on, right?  I want to play the metagame.

That is more votes than people we've had post in the thread I think.  I never voted.

My count is six players.

Speaking of which, Belac you ought to update 1st post to correspond what is going on with the game.  Age we're playing, list of players and nations, map (once that is settled), settings you want to use, etc...  Changing the subject line to Need one more player!! might help get someone else's attention.

I forget if we still needed a second water nation.  If so I'll play Oceania.  If we have two sea powers already I'll take Ulm.

slMagnvox,

I can take Mara or Atlantis (though now that you mention it, Ulm would be... no! Mara or Atlantis!). I'm in a wet mindset, so playing another Atlantis isn't going to bother me overmuch, even though MA is far and away my least favorite era for the fish. It's so... bland.

So take your pick. I'm flexible.

[Also, EuchreJack, yes, concur, hatehatehate fixed starts. But I'm nothing if not flexible.]
