Forum rules, on creating topics.
« on: December 08, 2009, 10:02:02 am »

People on the forums spring to incredible anger that other people make new topics about things that were previously talked about.

I'm sick and tired of these people spouting their heads off,

"use the search button"
"some else already suggested a topic in which your topic is contained"
"this bug was posted a few years ago, you should fucking know it already, even though you couldn't possibly have found it through the search button because the name was completely diffrent!"

You think someone needs to police these forums?
Well I'm going to police YOU.

Anybody can discuss what they think. Anybody.

The incredibly angry people should get their words in edgewise, before I mock people who spam "use the dam search button"

This isn't a suggestion forum or a help forum... I don't see why duplicates matter

I feel the same way. It happened with a NetHack thread I created in the 'Other Games' section, even when the old NetHack thread was... past it's prime.

Not only is it not actually advertising anything, it's just copy/pasting word salads about gold, runescape, oil, yuan, and handbags.  It's like a transporter accident combined all the spambots into one shambling mass of online sales.

Well, People apparently enjoy long, Winding derailing threads.

It's always better to necro the old one if It's less than a 2 months unposted in, Or If it's gotten wildly derailed.

If someone actually said this, that would be a problem.  But no, it's just something you made up.  Are you aware that there are good reasons to show people that their ideas have already been suggested, or that their bugs were already reported?

Whenever somebody starts a thread on a topic that's been mentioned before (and especially when a noob starts a thread on a question that gets asked all the time) everybody gets their panties in a bunch and starts a huge shitstorm. I don't really get why. Just ask the questions. It's not like there's some ratio of all threads to "important" threads that has to be maintained, or like extra threads hurt the quality of the forum or something. I've never gotten why people are such dicks about this stuff.

(this is true on every forum I've ever seen, btw)

Honestly, I see smarmy "Use the search button!!" posts on pretty much any topic that's been discussed more than once or twice before, particularly in the suggestions forums.

Informing people about this is fine, but a lot of such posts I've seen aren't terribly helpful otherwise, and tend to be the type that would give a likely-new forum member an impression that we're a bunch of anal-retentive jerks.

Yes, there's definitely a good and bad way to go about it.  I'm just not sure the OP knows there's a difference, especially because he mentioned Bug Reports, where people are generally civil about this stuff.

It's usually a lose-lose situation anyway.

Start a new thread and get complaints that there are already threads on the subject.

Or

Post in an old thread, and get accused of necro-ing a dead thread.

I never understood the stigma behind necroposting. If you have something to say about a subject you might as well say it.
