If you ever have the chance, buy the Isaac Asimov chronicles. It's 50 short stories of his, collected into an omnibus to celebrate 50 years of his life. It has that, and a bunch of other brilliant stories.

Cthulhu is unimpressed.  Cthulhu will just go to a different universe where things become more finely ordered over time.

Now that everyone's all nice and uplifted, read the other best short science fiction story of all time: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

Cthulhu is the source of entropy. :(

I don't think you've read the story close enough to make that statement. Asimov was not a religious man; what you are reading as "religious undertones" can probably be more tightly tied to the relationship between Man and the tools he creates.

I don't care how much of an asshole Ellison is. This is largely why.

I know that, but as I see it thats just another reason that the wordding of the ending was unecesery. Not that I ever claimed it was a very BIG flaw.

that is a great story. Asimov also wrote a few books outside of science fiction as well, such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lecherous_Limericks

It's a quick, succinct way of saying just WHAT happened.

Plus, I'm pretty sure they were alot more religious when he wrote it. Influence of the times, whatall.

Yes, the fifties. Hence words like XJ-23.

Also it really would have spoken with his audience during that period. Plus I think it's cool that the universe might be circular.

Its quite a peaceful short story. I enjoyed reading it, had a nice feeling to it... all calm. It wasn't rushed at all, and I feel a better person for reading it now...

Yeah Asmiov is awesome; his foundation series is really good. Havn't read any other short stories by him unfortunately.

Would the ending have the same emotional impact if it were more neutral? Unlikely.
