Probably already suggested, but just in case...

I'm thinking there should be excuses every once in a while for the dwarves to have a good carouse.  Therefore, these could function like parties, but in dining halls with meals and booze.  It probably goes without saying that I want my dwarves to actually drink from their mugs and goblets, and actually play their musical instruments- if and when those become implemented, a banquet would be the perfect opportunity for both.  Other ideas:

- May be thrown in honour of heroes, champions, etc to celebrate their heroic deeds.  Or,
- May be ordered by nobles like a mandate, requiring the dwarves to come up with a sufficient amount of quality meals and drink (and a suitably impressive banquet hall?), and then consume it all at once.

I like this, especially the noble idea. In fact, these should replace parties entirely. Parties don't really seem to have much point, at the moment.

Decadent booze-fests seems like a much more dwarvenly way of celebrating than everybody just standing around socializing as I presume they do at current parties. I like it.

Yes- I can't think offhand of a reason why friend-making and socialising at parties as they happen now couldn't happen while dwarves are idle or on break together, just hanging out.
