collapse an aquifer. as in, cave in a large portion, or even the entire aquifer. I can't do it because I suck at dorf fortress, but I need to see if the game spawns water when the aquifer collapses, or if it's all dust or something.

As long as you're collapsing natural, non-aquifer squares into aquifer squares, you'll be safe.  Or are you talking something like taking a section of aquifer and collapsing that?  Like, drop a chunk of aquifer down a level and see if it continues to spawn water?  I don't think anybody's ever done that.  It would be interesting to see what would happen.

Au contraire! Martin collapsed his entire map down 5z levels in the second DF Masters' Competition - Murkgrotto. And yes, it had an aquifer. I believe he did it because he could. I don't have the link for you, but you should be able to find it with a search of the Community/Succession forum.

Hang on- If you hollowed out below and around a chunk of aquifer layer, leaving it perched on a column like a mushroom cap, would it pour water out of the cap?

Hey, cool idea - keep 1 tile large aquifers on poles for flooding and mistmaking and various other uses for infinite water. This must be tested!!
