Just had dwarves get married for the first time.
« on: December 07, 2009, 07:20:29 am »

I didn't even know dwarves would marry in-game, I thought they would just remain lovers forever.

They are my 2 miners from my original 7. The only skills I gave them at embark were Professional Comedians (ha ha). I made sure they were the opposite sex to see if you can pretty much force dwarves to become lovers.

I don't know where I was headed with this, but entertaining to say the least.

It's speculated that dwarfs with similar personality traits are attracted to one another whilst dwarfs with conflicting traits are more likely to form grudges, and dwarfs with similar professions tend to spend more day-to-day time together (ergo more passive socialising). However, it'd be interesting to see, say, a pair of comedians pair up even whilst in the company of lots of other potential suitors with strong social skills (I'm suggesting that the game might discriminate between different noble skills even when most of them are used in what are apparently nigh-identical situations). Would be interesting to experiment with, and wouldn't be hard to engineer - modded identikit robot dwarfs with only noble skills and all labours turned off would do it.

Hmm.

My male miner is somewhat reserved, doesn't openly express his emotions, and isn't given to flights of fancy.

My female miner is comfortable in social situations, can handle stress, likes to try new things, is candid and sincere when dealing with others, and is immodest.

I suppose you could pretty much make any two dwarves fall in love by forcing them to spend so much time together.

An interesting challenge fortress would be to kill off 5 of the starting 7 and try and start a family with the remaining 2. A family palace!

You'd have to dispose of the migrants, and it would take ages to do... I once tried to delete the [Multiple_litter_rare] tag from dwarves to accelerate the process, but after that the dwarves didn't breed anymore. Maybe I forgot to replace it with another tag.

Dwarves don't have a LITTERSIZE token; the MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE token implies breeding, but without it you need to specify. Mind you, you can accelerate it greatly - LITTERSIZE:3:6 will make your dwarves have between triplets and sextuplets invariably(at least I think invariably).

You actually don't need to specify; the default in the presence of a [Child] tag but absence of a specified littersize or multiplelitterrare tag is [littersize:1:3].

Isn't there a restriction also that dwarfs won't marry direct relatives? So a 2 parent starting combo wouldn't go beyond 1 generation.

Dwarves (and other sentients) will marry aunts and uncles if they're of a similar enough age.  Goblins and elves tend to do that a lot.

So on that note, how many starting dwarves would it take to make a fortress that constantly grows via Only breeding?

Edit: Following the rules established, such as dwarves not marrying their parents, or siblings.

It should only take 4.

It should only take 4.

Only 3, if you can get a second-generation dwarf to marry the remaining unmarried first-generation dwarf.

Eh, I don't know...

With three breeding pairs and one extra I had trouble finding out who was able to get it on with who, since the relationships were full of OLDEST SIBLING FATHER SECOND BROTHER THIRD SISTER WHATEVER.

And then elves happened, nearly everyone died and the survivors that weren't widowers were related.

Probably gonna need an exterior gene pool supplement.
