I'd wait for confirmation myself.

Yay, for now is the time to being the start! I will be sending out prods and setting everything up... SOON(ish)!

Hopefully I will have everything done on my end by Monday midnight. If all the players have responded by then, I'll send out role PMs and we can get this thing running.

Really?  I wouldn't.  Unless he specifically says "CALL ME A CHICK I AM A FEMALE-THING," I figure it's better to assume that he wants to be male on the internet and not give him/her/it the annoyance of outing himself.

I doubt that everyone wants to answer gender questions around here.  Anonymity is often a blessing in disguise :P

I mean, wait for preference of form of address. I see no good reason to assume someone wants to be male on the internet.

I think the maleness stems not from any internet-related speech thing, but from general usage of "he" because of there not being a shorter word for "he/she".

Anyway, I think this quote may imply that theinnermonk is not the same person:
Also, Theevilmonk has been replaced by Theinnermonk.
This seems to imply it, to me, because I see no reason why someone would replace himself.

The problem being theinnermonk is not a real person, according to the board.

Ched, while it would be nice to thinkn that 'he' is just us looking for something neutral.. the truth is, the assumption is 'it's a guy so a he'.  I will admit I first known Cobalt as a girl during KWN when she addressed herself as 'she' and I had to keep looking back to that line to remember to put the correct address.

There ARE ways to writing in gender neutral, but, again sadly, those that learn only use it when reminded that "OMG GIRLS REALLY EXIST!!"

Sidenote, Glyph was marked she because of BM6 where, thanks to flavor, EVERYONE is a 'she'.

sidenote 2: it's a small relief to post in BM6 since I don't have to worry about which gender I have to use :P.

Very well, King Hatshepsut.

In an environment that is generally male-dominated, why not pretend to be male for a while--either as an experiment, or to protect one's identity?  I've seen threads pop up asking how to get chicks on B12; I've seen "outed females" have trouble with stalkerish behavior.  With all that sort of mess, why would you want to be female online?  For the increased (or decreased) status?  As a matter of pride?  As a matter of identity?  Our real selves are obscured by nicknames, our personalities likely skewed, our behavior sanctioned by anonymity.  I see no logical reason to expose that part of oneself, and would be interested in your rationale.

Dunno.  Hiding seems like a sensible recourse to me, but then I'm naturally somewhat secretive.

You may no longer address me as King Hatshepsut.  ::)

Won't hiding just perpetuate the hostile environment, in any such case where there are reasons that one would not feel safe with one's characteristics?

You mean you DON'T intend ill to us?  ;)

I'll upgrade your confusion level, Vector.  You wonder why Cobalt, a girl would declare herself a girl online.  For a good many years I had chosen a female persona when I was online.  In games where you 'choose your character' I STILL choose female over male.

Well, for my part, I would assume that most people are averse to lying. When you have a nickname - for example Vector - you don't claim that that is your name in real life. And internet anonymity does not involve lying about your location - it is simply not revealing it (well, you could lie, but you know what I mean). Thus it may be vastly preferable not to lie and pretend to be male, but simply to refuse to disclose your gender.

Hmm... where is that pm I sent to dak...

Androgynous Murder House Party.

And I'm guessing the scum will be of the same gender.

Possibly.

Actually, it seems unlikely that it's based on that book, but I came across it while looking up "androgynous" and the book's title stuck in my head for some reason.

Perhaps not an entirely serious guess, but as I said, the title of that book stuck in my head :P.

I suppose I read too deeply into the "Genders won't matter" comment.
