We really do need a category for both reaction_standard and non-reaction_standard towers.  Because the ones built with nameless tallow soap are gonna inevitably be a lot bigger.  To wit:

You could totally do it with a couple legendary soap makers, and a herd of cattle to use for fat. Perhaps it would be significantly easier if you set elephants as pets. Or maybe walruses. Lots of fat to get from them...

Mmmm... Walrus tallow soap...

Skyrender... I think you may have misunderestimated my resolve. :)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Done with completely unmodded DF. And yes, that big hole it is in was completely dug out by me. Over 800 bars of soap so far. And I have probably well over 40 hours of straight DF time before the contest ends.

The two bottlenecks are animals and to a lesser extent trees. I made over 1000 lye before starting my major buchery, and there was a very visible radius around my fort entrace which was completely deforested, and this in on a map with the highest level of trees. I was down to only a handful of trees left in the corners. Since then, I more or less stopped lye production to let trees regrow. As for animals, it is best to keep a nice amount of cows, donkeys, mules, and horses, since they all have at least 4 fat/animal.

Out of my fort of 70, 35 will be idle when I have not construction/major hauling to do, with at least 2 of each workshop in the soapmaking chain; if not for the bottlenecks, I could easily be pumping out a few thousand bars of soap a year.

I decided to embark on a terrifying, half-mountainous place, because it had features I wanted and no trading partners besides dwarves.  (Didn't feel like fussing with goblins this time.)

Sosadish Uben, the Ivory Bar of Soap, may have encountered too great of an obstacle to continue:

But what the heck, I'm doin' it anyway.  IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EASY!

EDIT:  Funny story, uh...Apparently you can't import glass and stuff for vials...Whoops, let's try somewhere else.

This looks fun. I'm going to do it without "cheating"

I've just embarked at Ubenuben Ubenubenuben Uben. (Soapysoaps the Soapy soap of Soap, for you humans). I've got just near everything I need for my soapy dominion.

Here's to soap!

Ya, you have to ensure your site has sand for the vials to build the alchemist shop. That or an underground pool/river so you can grow tower caps and get the random-soil-under-trees bug to make sand tiles

Unfortunately I won't be able to attempt this contest officially due to finals week being right now, but over a nice 3-week break I will make this my own personal challenge.

The infrastructure of my tower is complete.  Once all high-traffic bridges are linked to a lever, I can switch back to non-super dwarves for working on the rest of the interior.

It appears I've erased my last-dwarves-in-the-world fortress.  What a pity -- I had 2k cow tallow soap in an inverted pyramid with steel steps and was replacing some of it with crocodile tallow soap (I modded to allow domestication of crocs, but nothing else).  My soap maker (the first child to grow to adulthood) was legendary, which was the point of the exercise -- I built the pyramid just to have somewhere to put all the soap.

In a moment, I shall present to you:  Ubenurdim Kezatubenr†sh Kun, "Soaptowers the Dangerous Soapy Death of Cats"

Just as soon as I get the Visual Fortress pictures and DFMA file uploaded.

Edit:
Here's the map

All spheres, connected by bridges.  The screenshots were taken with the emergency lever pulled, while the map wasn't.

Ah, 'tis impressive, but is it a tower?
