That's not steep... At least not when your classes end this week giving you over a week of nothing but df time! :D
My attempt will be sans cheating or modding, since those would ruin the whole point of the competition IMO*. After all, anyone could go change all stone layers into soap and completely defeat the purpose of the excercise.

At the moment, I have all the infrastructure to make soap... These animals just aren't quite frisky enough. I started with about 10, now im at 40 about a year later. It would seem to keep the fat supply large enough I will have to wait at least another year until I have enough that the exponential nature of reproduction in DF kicks in. I just have to be careful to keep the population of them well controlled else I may surpass critical mass and cause an unstoppable cowsplosion.

Edit: it seems those crafty humans are trying to tempt me. They are offering almost 200% increase prices on my soap in an attempt to thwart my plans to create a soap tower. And my first batch of cows are maturing!

Edit 2: 120 animals, about 100 of which are cows or other large things... still maintaining 100 fps by turning off temp and weather.

*Note: opinion may change after first or second tantrum cycle.

Well, I have classes.  So.
I guess I will use modding.

I was thinking, there should be some story for this.  Like an overall, canon reason for why we're all building soap towers.

We must wash away the filth of this release version and cleanse ourselves for the coming scourge (of save files)! The world shall be reborn annew with a new era of dwarves, reflecting the light with the power of a hundred mirrors (mirror sites that is)! Can a dwarf who is unclean enter into this new, glorious era? Nay! It is thus why we must cleanse the world with thousands of blocks of soap!  ;D

"For the lulz" sounds like a good enough reason for me.

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Question: Could we mod in "soap" as a sphere, so that the dorfs could have a Soap god?

That would be hilarious.

I don't think every object needs to be added as a sphere... only related to a sphere

A soap god does not quite seem fitting...

This however...

Two spheres! A sphere of cleanliness intersecting with a sphere of fat. I envision the soap god as a really fat chambermaid. All dwarfs in the land would be naturally free of grime, vomit, and blood, but also morbidly obese.

Woe betide he who worships the soap god and does not wash behind his ears daily.

Well Purity as a sphere would make a bit more sense then cleanliness.

what worries me about this is that it makes me wonder if the forum is in decadence, i mean i have seen many post saying if they can mod to make things easier, but has anyone considered using moding to give more style? making it possible to build soap beds, weapons, and everything out of soap should add some extra score.

also how about original ideas? making a tower that has constantly water moving around the floors and instead of walls having holes that lead into magma making the simple fact of living in the tower of slippery death an extreme sport

That in particular sounds like it would get clogged with obsidian very quickly, then flood with water.

I had actually considered soap furniture, by the way.

I think water is a particularly appropriate component to fill the tower with, since it somehow causes your soap floors to become muddy, instead of turning the whole structure into one giant sudsy mess that collapses into itself.

I have a very useful suggestion for others attemping this challenge: It seems cows have a population capacity, and when they surpass it they no longer reproduce. As far as I can tell, this cap is somewhere between 40 and 60.
