Mine is slowly coming along... Unfortunately, the amount of time I'm sinking into it is causing some DF burnout.  :D

And legolord, did you designate all those buildings yourself or use some sort of mod/macro to do it? Because if you designated those yourself... Wow. After my (still only partially completed) collosseum build on a previous map, I hope to never designate another curved surface again.

Late summer and still no migrants! WTF!

Does soap burn?  Becase if someone could build a really massive and tall soap tower, then set the TOP level on fire, I would give them massive bonus points.*

All you'd need to do is set a pair of shoes or sth on fire, then have a brave dwarf carry this to the top of the tower and dump it on a square right in the center.  Quickly, mind you.

*Bonus points redeemable for jack shit just about anywhere.

Constructions don't burn.  Sorry.  Doesn't matter what they're made of.

Probably won't finish it by the deadline, but it'll be a personal achievement for me.

Won't be joining this myself, not having any time and wanting to wait for the new update before playing df again. But I'm definitely interested in what kind of crazy abominations will spawn from this.  ;D

Yeah, only got the bottom part of my tower up. Havnt had enough time, and just wont make it before the deadline.

Oh well, still was a somewhat interesting fort to play. Looking forward to the weirdness the others produced.

Toady, for future competitions like this I would suggest announcing them 2 months in advance to give 1.5 months to complete it rather than half a month like this one. Unmodded, I'm going to cut it somewhat close despite having almost nothing else to do for a week of the competition.

Probably modify the timeline based on the complexity of the challenge. If this were just a normal tower competition, half a month would probably be fine. A soap tower just requires a much more complex economy and has many more bottlenecks (such as the reproduction rate of animals) which make it take immensly longer. As it is, I will complete the tower for mine in about the next hour or so, but I likely won't have time to do nearly all the details and misc extra stuff I would have liked. In additon to having a lot of free time, I am also lucky to have a computer which has been capable of running at 100fps for nearly all the time I have been building. So far I am almost 11 game years in and with 70 dwarfs and around 150 animals; doing this long of a time with a computer only capable of running that at say, 20 fps, would likely be impossible even with an inordinately large amount of free time.

Edit: Tower pretty much completed; about 4750 bars of soap used, mostly cow and horse:

Here's my entry: Uveluben - Bearsoap

Ten dwarves, eight years, and 157 bears have created twenty level tall tower of dead animals and burnt trees set in an open cast mine.  I like to think the elves die a little inside whenever they visit me.

The idea for this came when I was looking through the raws to find what animals would be the best choice to farm for this project, and while hippos and elephants give 10 fat their offspring take 5 and 10 years respectively to mature, whereas polar bears give 9 fat and take just one year to mature, making them my preferred choice. I modded them to be wagon haulers so I could buy some on embark (the only modding I did for this challenge other than setting different names for male bears), picked a nice flat tiaga forest with sand and sent in my dwarves "The Clean Beards".

I figured that dwarfpower wouldn't be much of a bottleneck so in order to maximise my fps I decided to only use ten dwarves, the minimum to prevent immigration.  I got 22 volunteers for the last three spots in my second summer, but 19 fatal accidents later we had our full roster.  Goblins didn't survive worldgen which makes life easier for a small fortress.  The first few years were pretty uneventful as we waited for numbers to build, slaughtering the odd surplus male, after four years the elves offered me three grizzlies which I decided to buy, their numbers only really filled out as I finished.  In later years I noticed that everything happens at once, I had eleven out of twelve female polar bears give birth in no more than 30 seconds at one point (luckily the grizzlies were on a different cycle); but we persevered and finished up my tribute to the beast that made it all possible.

My inspiration

I was under the impression that the tight deadline was the whole point (though to admit, I probably could probably make a good entry in two weekends if I was devoted) to force people to improvise, prevent people from making excessive projects (more down to earth), as well as limiting the number of entries (or entries with obvious winning potential)

So I guess this wasn't intentional.

I like the sphere tower... but I don't see any horrible soapy deathtraps.

EDIT: Figured I should mention that all the towers are still pretty awesome! especially for the short time yall had.

hmmm. ive just found this thread, and just listened to the dwarf fort talk. im going to take a crack at this with superfast dwarves and kittens that give ungodly amounts of fat. i dont know how to do reactions without breaking stuff, and i have never ever made a bar of soap in dwarf fortress ever. it allways just seemed like too much trouble.

got a fresh version of df, got a world genning, getting too it right now. lets see if i can knock something out in the next few hours.
