Challenge: Soap Tower
« on: December 06, 2009, 07:17:56 pm »

For those of you who know what this is, you know what this is!  For the rest of you, listen to the entire DF Talk #5 (especially the end!)

Challenge closes Dec 16.

Winner will be chosen in a different vote thread by community, closing by Dec 23 (to give us time to put announcement on podcast).

Just to be fair, maybe you should wait until the transcript is released before starting the challenge?

Those that heard the message and wanted to take probably started immediately, or at least started planning, even though the thread didn't exist, so I don't think that waiting for the transcript would have made a difference on fairness.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

It was just my opinion, but since I'm not into making soap (never made any), I'm not interested in building a soap tower right now. So my opinion may be somewhat moot.

Are we going to be penalized if we use a custom smelter reaction to produce all our soap?  If we have to slaughter animals for every unit of fat we use, it will be a LOT harder.

Sorry, I don't mean to be unfair for those who are hard of hearing.  If you are hard of hearing and would like to get started on the challenge, send me a private message and I'll send it to you.

Just be honest with what you did and we'll let the community decide.  Although, I would recommend doing it the "old fashioned" way.

I was mostly trying to be an advocate (for myself and any deaf/hard of hearing people around here) even though I'm not really interested in it myself. I think the idea is cool though :)

That's okay!  We all need to be sensitive to other people's needs.   :)

Is there a particular reason why this is confined to those that have listened to the dwarf talk?

Yah, it sounds like minecraft with content, you have obviously missed the point, people dont like content, they like different coloured blocks.
Seems to work fine with my copy. As soon as I loaded the human caravan came by and the world burst into fire.

Why is there a problem with posting the challenge in the thread? Does someone get paid based on how many people listen to the talk as opposed to reading the transcript?

For one, whenever I try to listen to it, my computer hangs, possibly because my government is pulling some weird blocking strategy.

Well dude, the transcript is made for foreign people that have troubles understanding oral english, not for the deafs (of course it works too, but how many deafs or hearing unpaired people is there around ?). I ran a poll about users's location some month ago, and there wasn't even 50 % of american members at the time.

Well, deaf or bad at English, I think this topics title 'soap tower' pretty much says it all. And for all those so concerned about this, why not just post the last bit of the DF talk here?

Well, I like the excuse to make something silly, and so I found a neat spot to make a slippery foamy tower of doom. Ill be trying to get it done without any modding or utilities, as I think that getting enough a big enough annimal industry going is quite a fun part of this. Might even make a fully automatic soapmaking mill.

Oh, Darkflagrance, try to right click the DF talk link, and save it somewhere. Then try to run with a different medium (winamp, windown media player, whatever). It might solve the problem.

There should be two categories of contestants.

First, the modded category.  These will be judged on artistry alone, since if you make it easier to acquire soap, you could as easily be drawing a picture of a fortress.  What mod doesn't matter, in for a penny, in for a pound.

Second, the unmodded category.  These will be judged equally size and fortress composition as well as aesthetics, since it's as much a matter of effort as design.  Do show your number of bars.

However, there is the question of whether modifying worldgen or the init options should count as "modding", since the latter can be simply necessary for some people, and the former is still part of the game "as shipped".

At any rate, I'll be attempting an unmodded Soap Fortress.  As soon as my finals are over, so I'll be a week behind, but no matter.  I've got a red hot ace up my sleeve for this.

It's not really.  :)  It's just a "reward" for those who listen all the way to the end.   ;)
