Enemy diggers in this game would already be quite extreme to defend against without destroying your fortress, without them coming unexpectedly.

Imagine the first time you discovered that a digger has just dug the tile that stopped magma from flooding your fortress.
Fog of war would make such an attack almost impossible to stop.

Because lets face it in reality it should be impossible of defending.

I think this could be applied but just how it is applied now, but to a bigger number of creatures, basically all of those that are actually hiding, a siege should be easy to see, its a large army after all, as for digging creatures, well you should be able to hear a creature digging into you chamber, i mean the whole thing is enclosed, it should be easy to hear it...

Only one square for LOS is too extremely short sighted.  Something like 10-15 tiles of sight is more reasonable for a peasant to have, increasing in distance as the unit trains a scouting skill, equips binoculars (is this too high tech for the DF era?), stands guard in a watchtower, etc.

Also, digging enemies are going to be nasty, and they should be nasty.  Still, no one should be able to dig at near the speed of dwarfs.  If you don't want your fortress randomly flooded with magma via unseen enemy diggers, you should be posting guards and watchmen around the perimeter of your fortress.  The fog of war would transform this from being a good idea into being necessary to survive.

In reality it'd be impossible, period. Tunneling is used to collapse walls, not charge into a fortress from a tunnel foot wide

Let's not start this nonsense again however. There's a lot of threads about it
