It's still in progress. I have this so far. A few of those are useless, but most can be eaten or otherwise used. It's all prepared according to the actual state of the corpse. The meat, ivory, teeth and bone objects are on the next page, and the prepared yummy eyes are on the previous page. I haven't handled the flag for skulls yet, so they are counted with the bones for the moment. It's quite a bit of food, so the numbers might be tweaked, but the small critters also need to give you some food and elephants are very large, so it might end up being hacked up a bit from reality for balance purposes. Of course, elephants are a little harder to kill now, so maybe a bit of a reward is in order. We'll have to see how it plays out. I suppose I could use "sweetbread" for the pancreas. I'm not really sure of other special names. There are stacking/barrel size and hauling issues as well, and I'll adjust numbers and items as needed there as well. If that means randomly cutting several of the specialty food objects for each instance of butchery, that'll be fine for now, and they can come back once I tackle hauling after this release.

It has been getting colder, so I've been keeping my arms under the blankets. This has lead Scamps to invent a new game, where he'll claw my neck until I show him one of my fingers. Then he'll go about his business for the rest of the night (or day, I guess).

That's almost too graphical, or, well, I'm not too sure..
prepared elephant intestines [17]
... Nasty!

Hopefully the whole prepared meal thing will be balanced then.. If he keeps the current system you could slaughter an elephant and get... 300,000? Dwarfbucks in meals.

Butchering an elephant should take extremely long and be extremely tiresome.
Also I want some prepared elephant brain now.

Especially Mike Mayday with the fact that the Butcher obviously did its job with a scalpal

Heck he seems to have removed all the nerves from the elephant.

Mmmm, chopped elephant liver....... Wait 0.p

It would be nice if the butcher skill actually affected the amount of edible/usable parts from a corpse. It would actually give migrant butchers a pretty good use.

Well the question is that does failing an extract make the part useless or does it simply turn it into generic "Meat"... Or heck both with the chance of even poisoning the meat for the truely unskilled.

There could be quite a market in raising tame elephants!  I wonder if you could harvest their tusks while they are alive?

Prepared intestines + meat = sausage.  I like where this is going.

I think that would really only be a hazard if the creature had some poisonous component.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.

That is all I have to say. Really though, intestines are used in various cultures and since we are having pseudocultures or something in the next release, it would be easy to RP that some dwarven cultures and civs use elephant intestine for whatever purpouse.

Bah,Joeylemur beat me to it.

So Dwarves without knowledge of proper food preperation shouldn't have a chance of causing food poisoning?

Clearly its brain wasn't prepared enough or you wouldn't be butchering it.

the amount of meat an elephant gives is fine, when compared in relation to the amount of meat you'll be getting from other animals.

cats and dogs will probably give less meat then they do now, and cows will probably give more.

That would be good if the poachers would do that instead of killing them, eesh, Not that it makes it okay to poach them. I'm only against poaching elephants in the real world though, DF is a different matter.

Having a knowledge of what creatures are poisonous/venomous would also help.
