Suddenly, fire (40d)

Confirmed in two different cases, same fort. Good news: Fort history can actually be read, as it was part of a succession game.

Here's what happened that isn't mentioned.

World was made with temperatures off. Once turned on, it began to burn.

Related hilarity:

Dwarf who caught aflame and ran through water.

Fire imp launched a fireball and set the grass on fire?

Come on, more details.
Where on the map did the fire start? Near the magma pipe, or somewhere else?
Had any dwarves been exposed to magma at any point prior to turning temp on?
Did the fire start immediately after turning temp on, or some time afterwords?
Can the fire be recreated by reloading a save?

Perhaps you embarked in a ridiculously scorching hot area, and the summer heat was enough to set the grass on fire?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Yeah, spontaneous combustion has been known to happen in very hot areas.  Turn temperature back off, I guess?

They'd been killed.
Fire started nowhere near the magma - towards the upper right of the stone wall entrance.
No dwarves were ignited. No dwarves have been exposed to magma outside of the standard - Y'know, being at forges, etc.
Fire started immidiately.

Looking in dtil, the two tiles from which the fire originated have a temperature of 11001, or 1,033°F. Exactly why they have this temperature, I have no idea - all other nearby tiles are 50°F as they should be. Something very screwy seems to have happened during the season change...

The only thing I was doing during season change different than normal was turning on auto-on-season-change saves.

Even in the dead of winter, it burns.

Y'know, maybe the fire imps died near there?

Have you done any modding? That kind of fire could be started by items that have improper temperature settings. They might have been started by invaders or wildlife appearing on the edge of the map; check your units list for things you don't remember killing.

Looking at the screenshots in the linked thread, fire imps shot fireballs at those 2 tiles while temperature was off, which just caused them to turn into ashes but remain hot - later, temperature was turned back on (by which point the grass had grown back), setting the world on fire. Disabling temperature only stops temperatures from spreading and having an effect on their surroundings - even with it turned off, fireballs and magma will cause tiles to heat up (but they won't cool down).

If you'd like to prevent this from happening, build a dirt road over those tiles before turning temperature back on - it'll destroy the grass (and furrow the soil), preventing anything from catching fire.
