I remember having to do this in High School. The difference was that we had to make the egg protection device entirely out of toothpicks and hot glue. You could not have the hot glue touch the egg, and you could not make a parachute out of the hot glue. I tied to make a series of interconnected springs that would be adequately compressible, and made a air catch on one side to ensure that it fell in the intended direction.

It didn't work. In fact, none of them worked.

Get an invincible steel container small enoguth, a termos shuld work. Suspend the egg losely by ruber bands in the center. Fill the thermos COMPLETLY with eggwhite(SP?) sludge and seal it. wrap the container in thick cloth to round edges.
Why egg sludge? To make sure it's EXACTLY the same density as the egg itself, this should mean no forces acting on the outside container should be able to effect it at all, theoretically.

While that's a nice idea, how, without slicing the steel thermos in half, is he going to suspend the egg inside of it?

glue rubber bands to the inside in some nifty way, I have an idea but I'm not sure how to convey it in text.

a tube containing the egg, held in place by whatever soft stuff you have, and at the ends of the tube, two big and stabe wheels of several layers of cardboard

absorbs the shock sufficently

what's really important is that both the tube and the wheels are STABLE and won't just crack into themselves when landing on the ground

it will absorb everything nicely if it lands verticaly or horizontaly

to prepare it for landing badly, the weels should be reinforced so they can't bend to the sides

Or get a thermos that has an opening large enough for a small egg. My brother has one that could fit one quite nicely.

Oh, he ment that he couldn't get the egg throguth the opening? Yea then he needs another one.

Id really REALLY hate this project.

This is easy. Encase the egg in a 10x10x10 cube of D30 shock absorbing putty.

Invincibility isn't cheating!

Where do I got about finding shock absorbing putty?

Corn starch.

Nothing beats corn starch. Just fill a small plastic bag with corn starch, put the egg inside and drop the bag. Only problem is that it's so easy it's boring.

What about corn starch and water? Mmm non-Newtonian fluids. Somehow I think that'd be less than good, though.

Yeah, I had a junior high science class that did this activity.  I originally entertained a design that would suspend the egg in tupperware full of gel glue or something.  But one of the requirements was that we be able to get the egg back out to prove it didn't break, and I couldn't figure out how to make a repeatable container.

Actually, I was just really lazy and didn't get around to making it until like the day or two before.  I wound up using a coozie with a bunch of furniture stuffing duct tapped to the outside.  Did pretty well, but I've always regretted not trying my gel-suspension container.

Good to see Strife remembered the 10cm3 size limit.  Get's ya every time.
DO THIS.  Use a sheet of cellophane to separate the gel into 2 halves.  Encase in tupperware.

It was actually more of an excuse to do nothing but party in Physics Class after finals.

Also; My Physics Teacher despised the juniors so much that he gave the Seniors in the class, (me and 3 other people), a final consisting of one question "List five things you learned in physics class this year."

Excuse my 2¢. But didn't see this challenge done in Mythbusters?

It had to be something about which one is the better Mythbuster or something along those lines. I know this challenge sonds familiar.

My simple solution (for now):

Fill a party balloon with flour halfway, place egg in center, fill it the rest of the way. Make sure the egg is closer to the bottom of the balloon to keep it facing upright. It could work, provided the flour isn't tightly compact. Try and keep a little air inside to allow freedom, shake it first if you must to make it looser inside.

Shock absorption is key.

I may be missing something, but... how do you get an egg into a balloon?

Well, you can always use tweezers or some knick-knack to pull the sides open, or ask assistance from someone else, and fit the egg through the opening. Simple.

As for putting flour in, you may need a funnel filled with flour (a plenty large one, just in case; wide mouth for easier flow), and the balloon filled with air. Make sure to keep the air flowing out (to fill it in) to a minimum, or else you'll be having fun cleaning up the mess.

I advised a party balloon (those larger, non-water balloon ones) instead so that it's easier to fill and fit the egg in; while keeping within the challenge parameters. Plus, thicker walls for more shock absorption.
