Challenge: egg drop
« on: December 02, 2009, 08:11:59 pm »

I've decided to put the following challenge forward.

Goal: design plans for a device to safely transport an egg without causing damage to said egg.
Stresses: Device (including egg) will either be dropped 25 feet OR be dropped 20 feet with some downward velocity.

Restrictions: Egg must remain raw entire time.
Peanut butter is not allowable
Frosting is not allowable
Use of fireworks or other explosive is not allowable (I had to ask for it)
**Finished device may be no more than 10x10x10 cm**
Device must be able to be constructed with items that Strife26 can get.

Prize: Best entry will be decided by a poll or by Strife26 NLT Monday, Strife26 will construct and test device. If successful, winner will win 3.2 internets and Strife's heartfelt thanks.

Question: How do people prove that they didn't cheat?

I think that Strife is having a RL challenge, and he needs help.

You really think that?

You didn't read the first line of his post then.

I remember we had some sort of egg race/transportation competition in junior high.

I built a model rocket and strapped an egg on it. Sadly the egg never made it to the finish, the rocket engine wasn't well placed and my rocket caught on fire while flying through the air, destroying the parachute. The flaming egg rocket spiraled around in the air, nearly missing a classmates head before slamming into the pavement, splattering egg guts everywhere.

Maybe he's having a challenge to find the best one for his contest?

Are those little model rocket engines you can get considered explosive?

Yeah, I had a junior high science class that did this activity.  I originally entertained a design that would suspend the egg in tupperware full of gel glue or something.  But one of the requirements was that we be able to get the egg back out to prove it didn't break, and I couldn't figure out how to make a repeatable container.

Actually, I was just really lazy and didn't get around to making it until like the day or two before.  I wound up using a coozie with a bunch of furniture stuffing duct tapped to the outside.  Did pretty well, but I've always regretted not trying my gel-suspension container.

Good to see Strife remembered the 10cm3 size limit.  Get's ya every time.

Okay, heres my idea.

You get two hexagons each looking like this
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And you suspend the egg in the middle on rails. each for the rails have the best suspension you can get so that when you drop the egg the frame and suspension will absorb the blow. will

I remember when I did mine. I used cotton swabs to form two 3d half-circles, and used ducttape on the outside as a form holder. Put down some cotton balls in one of them, set the egg on top, stuff it full of more cotton balls, fill the other half-circle with cotton balls, put together. More duct-tape on the outside. Rip up 6 or 7 drink cozies, and tape the circular bottom to the outside of the ball.

I had a bit of fun with my teacher and this activity, and teaching why all options must be accounted for.

Yeah, my school had a pretty good way of eliminating the rope option.  The eggs weren't "dropped", they were chucked into the air by our surprisingly athletic teacher.  Potential energy is a bitch.

surprisingly athletic teacher.
Please tell me you don't think that the teacher is "athletic" because they were able to throw an egg twenty feet up.
That doesn't really take that much effort.

A) Not an egg, an egg enclosed by, in some cases, several pound of protective measures.

B) Not 20 feet in the air, as high and hard as he could throw.  By my crappy guess, easily more than 50.

c) I say "surprisingly", because he was a pasty little old man.
