7 Giants in one cave
« on: December 02, 2009, 05:16:17 pm »

So, I was adventuring, got a quest to kill a giant, I go to his cave.
I fight the first giant I see, barely win.
It still tells me the giant I am hunting is still alive, I quickly am cornered by 6 or so giants.
Brutal and horrific death ensues.
What are the odds of this happening?

Dunno.  I somewhat occasionally get four to one cave, but that's the most for me.  Giants seem to be the rats of the megabeast world.

I've gotten caves with large numbers of giants.  I think it's probably pretty standard.

In vanilla it is not so common, but possible.

I routinely increase all (semi)megabeasts' cluster_number to about two dozens, and increase the number of caves. As a side effect, most civs get wiped out by year 100, but if I stop worldgen at about 50, I can play and have lots of fun :) Also, they seem to all be legendary by that time, though quite killable by throwing spears and even in melee by a sufficiently skilled adventurer :)

Gonna check if they will mate and reproduce if I embark on a cave with them...

Oh carp, Giant Fortress. We'll have to replace all megabeasts with [REDACTED] metal collossuses to make up for it.

cluster_number

What about littersize? Would that tag affect megabeast (or anything, for that matter, because when I looked at the vanilla raws, I didn't see even one tag like that).

[liTTERSIZE:X:X] only effects how many mini-giants are brought into the world with each birth, and is capped when their population reaches max.

OK, but it will in practice increase their population. The way you said "only effects (sic) how many [are born]" makes me think that it wouldn't help.

I used that setting for goblins once, but to this day I do not know whether that actually increased their eventual population. I mean, I was getting sieged by a shitload of them (sieges of 3-4 squads for several years), but I don't know whether that was caused by me changing their [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POPULATION:2] and [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_PRODUCTION:2] tags to 1.

They don't seem to reproduce during worldgen, so no.
