LMAO!  2 CAT!!1

No, for srs, this forum can be incredibly elitist at times, which doesn't sit well with the fact that we're not some special hidey-hole where normal internet problems don't exist anymore, if we ever were at all.

The SA forum also frequently deride us as sycophants who worship the ground Toady walks on.

I'm probably not helping that image with a donatathon thread and such.

Eh, that's not bad Aquizzar.

Since DF is "donation-ware", it's the community as well as Toady that does the marketing and advertising for DF, to convince people that it's a project worth their playing time and money. EDIT - especially since most of Toady's time is programming, just think how many people have heard of DF through Boatmurdered alone, so we have to acknowledge and thank the goons here ;) and others outside the community who spread DF through word of mouth.

Not naming any names, but there are those in the community who have less, or have expressed almost outward hostility to the direction DF is taking (as well as Toady), and for the most part, they're still around.

This community and Tarn act mature about criticism and acknowledge it, and toady contributes information annd interacts with the community often; this is again more than many other developers and games.

Often the issue is that the community often sees Dwarf Fortress as the game it will be while the general player sees DF as the game it is now.

We need to realize this and not be hostile or defensive about it. Toady's doing a pretty good job with it so far so I'm sticking with the community and contributing in small ways I can even if not always donating. As a community we have to welcome others into the community and acknowledge our differences.

Spoiler: 2 CAT!1 (click to show/hide)

I think we are fairly well known among most the *chans. 7chan has a succession game going in /vg/ and I'm certain most of the *chans have or have had a DF thread on either their /v/ or /tg/.

I found out about it from the Penny Arcade forums.  They have a staple megathread for talking about Dwarf Fortress.  If I remember correctly, it was late 2007, when I was hanging around there during the pre-release excitement about Super Smash Bros (my how time flies), when I noticed a thread titled "Dwarf Fortress: Child cancels Sleep: Caged" or something like that.

Woah, that means that I've been playing DF longer than Aqizzar. I also just noticed that I registered earlier too. Weird, It feels like Aqizzar has always been here.

Not only is it not actually advertising anything, it's just copy/pasting word salads about gold, runescape, oil, yuan, and handbags.  It's like a transporter accident combined all the spambots into one shambling mass of online sales.

Aqizzar has always been there. In your heart.

Still, I've never really noticed any sort of outside commentary about Bay 12. 'Cept one guy on my Minecraft server (may it rest in peace) said something about "everything those bay12ers touch turns to f***ing gold" or somesuch.

Yah, another thread about ourselves.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well, let me take a spin on this.

Bay12 has defiantly impacted my life.  Never has a community been so cool.  This is the only forum I'm going to be on ever and the only one I've been on really.  As long as you're not offensive or spamming then you can post whatever you want and people just roll with it.

For Example: This thread.

Even though I don't think the OP was whatever, a full conversation came out of it.  Like woah man it's so cool.

Some effects:

1.  I want a beard.

Who can say no to that?  Not me no way.

Pretty much what ToonyMan said, but I've been on the Cracked forums under a different name, thinking of entering their Photoshop competitions.

I can't even BEGIN to list all the ways the comunity has afeected my life, it has for a long time b een the most dominating factor in my life, I would be a 100% different unrecognizable person withoute it, in fact that person wouldprobably have almost no belifs, values, or personality traits in comon with me.
