Texas Governor Race season has begun
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:14:10 am »

And I just saw a political ad. A Mr. Farouk Shami is running for Governor as a Democrat. He is a Palestinian American businessman, who invented the first ammonia free hair color, and owns several hair care cosmetic product brands. He also brought roughly 6000 jobs to Texas in the form of production plants for his business, after relocating them in from China last year.

While at first I thought it was a little silly to think that this guy stands  a chance in Texas of all places, a little more research shed more light on it. He came to America and had 52 dollars to his name, and worked as a hairdresser. He soon developed an allergy to the Ammonia used in hair coloring at the time and was urged to leave the business for his health. This obviously led him to invent ammonia free hair color. His business now earns about 3 billion dollars annually. This guy isn't a joke.

I am surprised that his buisness success is really all that qualifies him.

Especially since for the most part it was rather lucky.

But alas politics is usually just posturing. Well Posturing and Corruption/Favors I guess.

I am having so much trouble not posting... sod it.

In before Sofia/Aqizzar for Governor.

Hope it doesn't occur, all the same. Tired joke it tired. Sorry I couldn't contribute more.

As far as I can tell in my limited perception of Americans, a bona fide success story of 'Man comes to America poor, becomes billionaire' will win over more than a few. Looking forward to see how it'll pan out.

I don't think you understand what democracy is. The constitution requires you to be 30 years old, a United States Citizen, and a resident of Texas for five years. Those are the only qualifications you need in order to be considered eligible for the Texas Governorship.

I mean more or less qualified in the eyes of the citizens. Not legally.

If he's gone from being almost penniless to being a billionaire, he must be good at something.

There is an old term: "A perfect shot doesn't make you an Archer"

Actually it is a bit different then that and it isn't that old.

Awww....  Dammit, I was gonna make this thread!  Which pictures and biographies and everything!  Curse my procrastination.  Well, I'll probably do it anyway, because the six-ish way race (soon to narrow to two or three or four) actually is pretty interesting and mildly hilarious for everyone outside Texas too.  Oh yeah, and-

Spoiler: Get Kinky (click to show/hide)

Hey, Kinky is a serious candidate!  After all, he wrote the first country-western song about the Holocaust.

There are two things we Americans eat up more than pizza and apple pie; and those are American Dream Success Stories, and silly foreign accents.

A Palestinian businessman who makes 3 billion dollars a day likely has both of those.

And one thing people hate down there are democrats.

And one thing I hate are wannabe cowboys.
IT'S A FUDGING COW HERDER. WHO HERDS COWS. FUDGING COWS.
FUDGING.
COWS.

This is how you get when you live in Montana with all the tourists and 'cowboy' ranchers.

Now gold miners... that's where it's fudging at.

Indeed, when the ranching industry/culture first took off in Texas (after the Civil War, when Confederate sympathizers flooded Texas to escape war trials), the term "cowboy" did indeed mean "cow fucker".  It was seen as work fit only for Blacks and Mexicans.  You can blame the modern Cowboy on 1900s dime-store novelists who never left the East Coast.  Damn media.

We all realize of course that, should anyone win, Arnold will just shoop back in time and kill them so he wins unopposed.
