Still doesn't solve the problem of my friends wanting to do nothing but smoke weed. I fear that some of my old relationships may be decaying as a result of this, and the prospect of losing that many friends is frightening.

I'm trying to convince them to quit, but I don't think it's working.

At least it's not alcohol. That'd probably get someone killed.

Well, I know where he comes from, my country is the weed capital of the world. At some point, I stopped smoking marihuana, moved to a different city, moved on and made new friends who do like to get out and actually DO something. Hardly ever speak to my old friends again, of whom most are still smoking daily, but some quit and actually got a life.

Smoking marihuana is a lot like gaming, really. It's just killing time and escapism.

I find weed and alcohol are extremely parallel to each other in terms of how harmful they are or can be.

I dunno, I rarely hear about people high on weed getting into car accidents and scraping their frontal lobes off on the dashboard.

Sidenote: people really high on weed have no motivation to go outside :P

I've honestly developed a psychological dependence on the internet. When I'm not working, I'm checking forums, mail, chatting, news, attending to the girly...

It got worse when I acquired my G1, now on the move I have everything, access to the lot of human knowledge, in my pocket.

I go camping and hiking to ditch the horrible stream of information I'm constantly subjected to.

Weed has the effect to your body system of that of 4 cigarettes, in terms of lungs and so on damage. If their high on weed and they get behind the wheel, chances are they'll still crash. Sure, it may be only a little higher then when your not smoking but the long term effects of it can be rather devestating if smoked for a long period of time over several months or years.

Weed has the effect to your body system of that of 4 cigarettes, in terms of lungs and so on damage.

That sounded like BS to me, so I did some research, the first article I pulled up with "effects of cannabis on lung capacity" gave me this article.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17666437
"For measures of airflow obstruction, one cannabis joint had a similar effect to 2.5-5 tobacco cigarettes."

Looks good for you, at least on one count. So then I looked up airflow obstruction.
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/449621
"Physiologically, airflow obstruction is characterized by a low ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) to FVC (FEV1/FVC). "

So what is FVC?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vital_capacity
"Vital capacity is the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inspiration."

Could that have anything to do with, taken from the first article, "A dose-response relationship was found between cannabis smoking and reduced forced expiratory volume in 1 s to forced vital capacity ratio and specific airways conductance, and increased total lung capacity."

Also, I don't see what smoking 4 cigs has to do with crashing a car. I used to drive stoned a lot when I had a car and I don't see how it's dangerous.

Driving stoned is dangerous because you drive 50km/h on a highway where everyone else drives 120km/h and you think "Whoah I'm going FAST!".
In my limited and never-again experience, anyway.

I actually think smoking's more damaging because we smoke a lot more than we toke. Well, I don't use weed, but I do smoke, so I can't exactly do a comparative analysis here.

And like Kael said: when you're stoned, you probably won't really want to go outside.

increased total lung capacity."
I was under the understanding that this normally happened in response to one of two things:  recent need of more oxygen (as if you were to take up a sport or brass instrument like the trombone), or recent decrease in how effectively your lungs absorb oxygen.

Anyway, I met a few regular potheads at school.  They're completely unmotivated jerks.  They pick on me all the time for not liking parties, but their idea of partying is to pass a blunt around.  I swear, they have no life.

Me, I think I have not so much an addiction as a repellent.  I cannot stand the taste of water, and it always makes me feel more thirsty.  So I always drink soft drinks or juice.  And occasionally milkshakes, but those are more of a dessert.

I reckon it's because you gotta hold it in, like if you practiced holding your breath you'd get better at it. So we're in the same ballpark.

Yeah weed starts as a social thing and tends to turn into a solitary thing, like smoking does for some.

Weed may be as harmful to you as alcohol (I doubt it, though), but it's definitely less harmful for the people around you. Alcohol makes people aggressive, weed just makes them too lazy to cause any trouble.
