Quitting Addictions and Habits
« on: December 02, 2009, 05:03:48 am »

Have an addiction? Want to quit? Are you quitting? How is it going for you, and how are you feeling right now?

I've personally got a few addictions/habits I should quit, and today I'm starting with Coffee.

How do you know you have a coffee addiction? You get a headache if you don't drink it for an entire day.
Yesterday was such a day, and I decided I was done with it.

So I still drink coffee, but will limit myself to 3-4 cups a day (coming from 10-16 a day). We'll see how it goes from there. I'm already at 2 cups now at 11:00 AM, though, still a whole day to go.

In the future I should/want to quit:
- Coffee
- Smoking (that's going to be the hard one)
- Gaming (gaming for pleasure is ok, but when it's becoming a compulsory habit until 2 AM every evening it's not)
- Biting nails
- Cursing
- Irking other people for fun
- Probably more I can't think of right now.

10 to... my mouth feels like melted rubber and I get a severe headache after 2 cups of coffee. I love the stuff, but I limit myself. I have so much luck when it comes to becoming addicted to narcotics, because it's probably never going to happen. I'm deathly afraid of illicit substances, irrationally terrified of cigarettes and so on. The only thing I'm quite willing to try is alcohol.

I'll report back in eight or so years, see if I have a habit then.

Only so I can try and lose it and tell you about it.

I'm trying to contribute.

How nice of you  :D

But do us all a favour and make sure you don't need to be in this thread, at all... Although we like your company, I'd hate to see you go on drugs just to hang out with the 'cool'* crowd. ;)

Coffee is easy. The withdrawal symptoms (headaches) only last for about a week or so. You should be fine.

No headaches yet, but no cravings either. I thought I'd start with an easy one to get the hang of quitting :)

The only things I've been addicted to (besides, sometimes, certain computer games or other activities, which just fade after a day or three) are caffeine and Ambien. Caffeine many times. In all cases I've just gone cold turkey. With the caffeine I just stop as soon as it's either not easily available to me or I don't need to get up early in the morning and usually both circumstances are correlated anyway (i.e., having a job or having early classes). Right now my caffeine addiction is probably here to stay since I have a job and I'm out of college.

Ambien I just quit because my 2 week supply ran out and I wasn't dumb enough to buy more online. It's INSANELY addictive though. Still, no real withdrawal effects, just a strong, strong craving to have more, since it makes you higher than a kite and extremely ecstatic.

Sedation. Relation? Vacation! Moderation... Probation?! Sensation! Nation, ration, station, no really, what is it?

Edit: another topic gave it to me: Procrastination!

I'm completely addicted to melange coffee. My eyes have gone a deep dark blue I can't really function at college without it, and I can hardly afford the miserable down-time, being gloomy enough as it is.

I stopped my smoking habit!

I think I am still addicted though, it's still something I would enjoy to do in moderation (if I could possibly do it in moderation)

Unfortunately it makes me smell bad and my wife not attracted to me.

I think that was enough to make me stop. Frankly if it wasn't for her there is no doubt that I would still be smoking.

Hmmm, I quit once for my better half (a different one than the current) 10 years ago, and failed miserably, up to the point that I was smoking but lying to her about it... Made a promise to myself never to do that again.

But congratulations! How far along are you?

Thanks! Thats nice to get some recognition, I feel a little bit warm inside!

About 1 year this time.

Yeah, I was smoking and lying about it too .. real shitty behaviour, but hay ho, thats an addiction for you ...

Hopefully I can steer clear of that from now on ...
