No one will make Charcoal

I'm trying to Smelt gold into bars and I have no fuel. I have a wood furnace but even with no other jobs on the list my dwarfs leave the job inactive. Help, this is my first fortress I've actually found a valuable ore before things were already falling apart and right now this is all that's stopping me.

Do any dwarves have "Wood Burning active"?

'v' over a dwarf, then switch to his preferences by hitting 'p', then his labor preferences by hitting 'l'. Use +-*/ on the numpad to scroll down the list. Enable wood burning by highlighting it and pressing 'enter'.

Then wait for your dwarf to complete the task.

Also, you might want to select a specific dwarf to perform the task, ideally one that isn't already busy doing other things - if you've got any peasants or other dwarves with useless professions (like Soaper, Pump Operator, Animal Caretaker, or Bowyer), they make excellent candidates.
