Martyrlances - Smelter's Paradise
« on: December 01, 2009, 03:44:57 pm »

I was kind of surprised at this one.  It's not often you find a site with magma, a bottomless pit, flux, iron-producing ore, a brook, sand, AND a non-savage biome.  But that's exactly what I found at this particlar site.  I was even more impressed after I ran Reveal on it to check the ores present and discovered that this place is loaded with just about every metal in existence AND has Bauxite deposits all over the place.  What this site lacks in the excess features present in Dwarf Heaven, it seems to make up in sheer options.

(Sorry about my weird tileset.)

Features: Magma Pool on surface, Bottomless Pit next to it buried 2 Z-levels below the surface, brook in the southwest corner, Limestone for flux all over the place, Bauxite layers present, Red Sand near the brook

Ores Available: Native Aluminum, Cassiterite, Native Copper, Galena, Gernierite, Native Silver, Magnetite, Malachite, Native Platinum, Sphalerite, Tetrahedrite

Ores Unavailable: Bismuthinite, Native Gold, Hematite, Limonite, Raw Adamantine

Nearby Civilizations: Goblins

Notable Strengths: Just about every ore in existence can be found, many very useful features and minerals, steel can be made en masse, no HFS (meaning no burning demise)

Notable Weaknesses: No Lignite/Bituminous Coal, initially scarce trees and plants, takes a few years for Humans and Elves to notice you since they're not nearby, no HFS (meaning no burning demise)

If you want to check out Martyrlances' site yourself, here's the worldgen parameters.  There's a ton of other interesting sites in this world too.

That's a very interesting tileset. Is it a personal creation?

Nope.  I downloaded it from a random Google search for DF tilesets.  It's labeled "Ian_16x16" or somesuch.  Not as nifty as the much-preferred tileset, but it was the first one I found that looked half-decent, so I stuck with it.

That would be Ian McConville's tileset. (Artist of Mac Hall / 3 Panel Soul)

because that's not the dwarven way. Could you make more statues of Urist instead of an impossibly large one chiseled out of the mountain? Sure, you could. If you want to be called a ninny elf by all your friends.

How amusing.  One of the reasons I decided to give this game a try was because of Ian's Dwarf Fortress comics.  I didn't even realize he was the one who made the tileset I'm using.

I've been playing at the site for the last hour or so. It seems wonderful, so far! Thank you for sharing it  :)

I noticed that lack of HFS (and thus burning demise) is listed as a strength and a weakness.
...

I agree.

What can I say?  Sometimes we all just want to channel our inner Joker and watch the world burn...

Looked pretty nice, except for the massive change in z levels :(

The Z-level listing on the world map screen is a bit deceptive.  It claims there are extra-steep cliffs, yet when you embark, you'll find that the highest cliff is all of 2 levels high.  And anyway, what enterprising Dwarf cares about high cliffs?  A simple Carve Upward Ramp designation or 200 can solve any cliff problem you might have!

Looks like an awesome site. If you want to gen more of these, delete marble out of the raws. Lets you search for only useful flux with magma. I routinely embark on chalk, limestone, or dolomite layers with magma nearby, they're incredibly fun if easy maps to play.
