Leo: There's not a single case of people going blind from corrective eye surgery though, from the millions of operations.

Also I should include the caveat that I am absolutely against plastic surgery, I can't stand watching plastic surgery shows, I can't understand why people cut into healthy flesh to make others think they're pretty. That bias may ruin my perception on this. But as a glasses-wearer the only way I will undergo vision-correction surgery is if there is a clause in my agreement that if I lose 100% vision I can claim 10 million dollars and punch each surgeon once as hard as I like. Per eye, with the money award descending in percentage of vision loss to $100,000 at 1% loss in one eye.

At that point I can assume that a reasonable surgeon would be willing to undertake the procedure only if he were certain of success. At that point he will value my eyes as much as I do. Because you know I would punch him in the eyes if he failed.

I'm considering eye surgery because one day, I'd like to take these hateful lenses off, and leave them off.

Laser surgery is safe, damnit. Stop making stuff up. If they blinded five people of every 100, they'd lose their license in a blink.

Leo: There's not a single case of people going blind from corrective eye surgery though, from the millions of operations.

I don't know about "blind", but here's some stuff I just pulled up on LASIK:

Quote
The most common complication from refractive surgery is the incidence of "dry eyes." According to an American Journal of Ophthalmology study of March 2006, the incidence rate of dry eyes from LASIK after the six month post operative healing period was 36.36%. The FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) website states that "dry eyes" may be permanent.

Quote
The risk for a patient of suffering from disturbing visual side effects such as halos, double vision (ghosting), loss of contrast sensitivity (foggy vision) and glare after LASIK depends on the degree of ametropia before the laser eye surgery and other risk factors.

Quote
The following are some of the more frequently reported complications of LASIK:

    * Surgery induced dry eyes
    * Overcorrection or undercorrection
    * Very Low level vitamin D - Sun sensitivity
    * Visual acuity fluctuation
    * Halos or starbursts around light sources at night
    * Light sensitivity
    * Ghost images or double vision
    * Wrinkles in flap (striae)
    * Decentered ablation
    * Debris or growth under flap
    * Thin or buttonhole flap
    * Induced astigmatism
    * Corneal Ectasia
    * Floaters
    * Epithelium erosion
    * Posterior vitreous detachment
    * Macular hole

Also, you said "corrective eye surgery" in general. You seriously think that, throughout all the forms of corrective eye surgery that have existed, not a single person has ever had an eye ruined? I could understand if you were talking about a single type of procedure, but seriously now.

Mind you, this isn't to say that eye surgery (of the type used today) is really all that dangerous; it's pretty safe. But it's not perfect, and complications do happen.

Nothing is perfect.

With surgery, it's a simple trade-off; how bad does it have to get before you're willing to take the risk? How bad does it have to get before you're willing to try to fix it?

For each person and each invidivual instance, that will vary.

I can't understand why people cut into healthy flesh to make others think they're pretty.

What's hard to understand? Physical attractiveness is women's main currency in the mating marketplace, not to mention a big part of their social status.

The problem with plastic surgery is that you look like a permanently surprised wax dolly.

Only if it's done badly or too much.

I used to know a girl who had a very bad fall that wrecked her nose.
While she was in the hospital they gave her surgery to fix it.

Plastic surgery is not always about "enhancing", should she have to walk around with a ruined nose because she fell?

You should go live in the mountains for a year without ever going inside, that would cure your eyesight without the money problems.

Oh yeah, and dont wear glasses. Those make your sight even worse!

As for plastic surgery you dont need that either. All you need is some tape, a knife, some matchs, and your nails and you can fix anything!

Well I guess you would also need a glass jar for certain things, but thats not really that expensive.

Five percent? That's one in twenty. I don't blame the doctor for a critical failure if the RNG is being a dick. Any above that though, and I don't like my chances.

This would be true, if all of modern medicine were composed of old wives' tales.

Here's my way of rating this sort of thing:

Do I need it?

Do the potential benefits and the chance of getting them outweigh the potential complications and the chances of getting those?

If the answer to the first is yes, it's an automatic "go for it," unless there is a better option that's a better fit for #2.  If it's only #2 that has yes to it, then, well, it depends.  If yes to both, it's "go for it dude!".
