The US haven't won any wars as far as I can see, didn't join ww2 til the end, lost vietnam, lost afghanistan, lost iraq, and probably lost every other war they need to be in continuously. What does that leave, dropping a nuke on a city? Hoorah! If the US was well-trained or courageous it wouldn't need the threat of nuclear warfare. Who's afraid of a bunch of wacko scientists anyway?

Edit: fuck it, I shouldn't disregard the courage the US has shown in its conflicts, if the US can kick the shit out of the world, so be it.

This is substandard trolling F- see me after class!

We protect US corporations by invading countries, duh.
We didn't loose any of those wars, one of the reasons America is the world's leading industrialist country.

Untill china obtains a steady supply of fossil fuels and out mans us, anyway.

Okay let me say this, define war. War by definition in the US must be declared by Congress, most of the "wars" we were/are in are instead mearly conflicts.

The UK manages to bumble along in conflicts, somehow managing to not get all our troops killed because all the vehicles are in bloody Devon or somewhere.

Okay I'll try to explain it a little better. Basiclly for the USA to offically go to war it has to be approved by Congress, anything else is not a war but a conflict no matter what the pres or anyone else says. By the word of it we've technecally won all of our wars since anything else we've been involved in have been conflicts not wars. This is of course the word of it and not the spirit, spirit wise we've been in plently of warlike situations since WW2.

Note the distinction between formal declarations of war and authorizations of shooting some stuff.

Thats a good way of defining it, technecally its more word play than anything but by the word we've got a perfect track record.

By that logic a country could guarantee a perfect record by declaring a conflict as a war after it was already over and historians are poring over documents.

History is written by the victors, yes.

But no, a war is a formal declaration that can't be made after the fight is over.  A conflict isn't a formal declaration, and there are limits on troop numbers and length of deployment for a non-war conflict.  You can tell the difference.

so... if you invade a country, but you don't bother to ask congress, then it is not a war, it is a conflict? I am sure whoever is on the other side would disagree.

Does it matter? It's not likely the US congress writes international law, or dictionaires, for that matter.

While the president is CinC, his powers are very much limited without a declaration of war. Amongst other things, he can only deploy the army for 90 days in an emergency without congressional approval.

Edit: China may have 2 million active troops, but look at their total population available for military duty. They could send man waves and win a war against anyone with muskets  :-\
It doesn't work, what with machine guns.  It was tried early on in World War I, but failed horribly.

Also, we KICKED JAPAN'S COLLECTIVE ASSES in World War II.  Dropping The Bomb on Hiroshima just prevented an ungodly bloody invasion of Japan (at least that's what it looked like at the time).
