River is silly.
« on: November 30, 2009, 08:02:05 pm »

I've got an underground river that pulls a turn like this:

|_
 _|
|________

This being an up/down cross section.

Because of the turn, the red part is drained and dry, because the river opens in a shape like this:

|_
 _|
|_|_______

I thought that was neat, is all, but also un-river like.

Here's a hard to make out Visual Fortress picture.

Apologies. I couldn't help myself. Getting back on topic, yeah, I don't have any screens handy, but I've seen something similar in one of my own fortresses. I guess it could be the underground equivalent of an oxbow?

Maybe, more like a river with a ceiling at this point, though.  A bunch of zombie snakemen are wandering around on it plotting to take over my fortress, which might be a little more exciting.  Relentless assault, and at about year 2 I haven't seen a single hostile.

It's like I'm the only one who came to my party.

...un-river like....

Actually, I think this is actually quite river-like, as in real life rivers change course over time and leave areas dry which were once wet.  I can easily imagine a situation where something like this could occur where the water initially eroded around a harder stone formation and then eventually wore through cracks in the stone eventually eroding the passage to the point where the water is completely diverted.

Just sayin...
