Terry Pratchett and Australia
« on: November 30, 2009, 01:31:17 pm »

Hello Bay12. About two weeks ago I got back from a trip to Cairns in Australia. It was AMAZING :o . Rainforest, SCUBA diving, massive swarms of fruit bats, fishing, a beautiful resort/hotel, and everything else. Oh and Discworld. I have an Amazon Kindle that I got as a birthday present from my aunt (get most of my nice stuff from her). I downloaded Small Gods and Men At Arms before I left and figured I would read them on the flight. I ended up reading them in all of my spare time between rugby games and a bit of nethack. :P  Not to say all I did was read but I did buy Night Watch, Thud, and Guards! Guards! while I was there as well. Amazing books and I just downloaded Feet of Clay (I like the night watch). So this thread is essentialy here to discuss anything related to my post.  ;D

Downloading books...

Why do I always get goose bumps when I hear it (especially if it's about downloading GOOD books)?

I think I'll skip the Kindle technology. I like owning huge amounts of books...one of the few things I actually want to own a lot of. Along with music and bike shit.

Yeah, there's just something so real about holding a proper doorstopper in your hands.

Yep I prefer having the physical book myself, I like to use paperbackswap.com for getting books lately. Its a great site for getting rid of books you don't want and getting different ones in exchange for just postage.

I owned lots of books for a while. Then I started moving all the time and carting around so much stuff is a pain in the arse. As much as I loved my books I decided only to keep the ones I love and will likely re-read and the ones that I didn't like as much but would make me look cultured by having them on my bookshelf. :P

Small Gods and Men at Arms are my two favourite Pratchett books. Good choice to start reading the dicsworld series on them.

I love my ebook reader. I love being able to read my ebooks (of which I have MANY!) and my class notes anywhere, without having to get out my netbook (which while very portable is not deployable anywhere anyway).

Your holiday sounds nearly identical to mine, except I only bought one Pratchett (Making Money) and it was good ol' fashioned paper. Scuba diving off the Great Barrier and swimming round a river in a rainforest were major highlights, best holiday ever. Did you go to Port Douglas?

Dude. You choice of books is bad. It should've totally been The Last Continent, which is about a sufficiently Australia like place that is not Australia.

Went up to Port Douglas one day for a dive thing. Real touristy. The second one was better. Even better was the fact that I was certified.

I stayed in Port Douglas specifically. It was touristy to the max and I loved the place. Also first SCUBA experience.

Amazing.
