Yeah I had my guy set up and sitting there for 2 or 3 minutes waiting to see if I'd get the HS and then I was suddenly booted out of the game... lagged to death apparently.

Also: Made myself a leanto hut. Figured out how to put my bed, made of razorwire and pins, in it. And have so far caught two bunnies. Then I was mauled by a bear. A X level bear.

Bears don't attack until you're level five, apparently. You must be better at this than I am (It won't even download for me. ._.).
Also, who's client where?

You got it backwards.  Bears attack when THEY are level 5.  They dont care what level you are. 
Although one important point to remember is that if you dont buy hunting, ants will ignore you, so you can safely loot their anthills.  Once you buy hunting, they become murderous.

Help, I seem to be out of luck with spawning.
I also seem to be alone in the world. Does the "Kin" part fill up as you meet people or am I truly alone on an unknown server?

Do not panic. You have spawned in a random section of the wilderness. I recommend you take the time to learn the basics. And create some kind of shelter for yourself and your tools. Your priorities should be food, food and food. In that order. Press okay to continue this tutorial. - Also it means you are alone in the world without a single friend to your name. Not that you are literally the only sapient being on the server.

Two things:
1: Dont use up all our leeches, we may need some for heals.
2: Do you really want to eat a fish which just swallowed a leech (hint: fish don't chew their food much)?
