Oh dwarf fortress

What dwarfy things I could do with you if not for the pillage it brings upon my fps. I decided to start over with a simple effective defense, limited migrations, and less awesomeness. My previous fortress had a wall constructed all around the outside of my map (which my markdwarfs patrolled in endless circles), with only one caravan-sized corridor leading into my fortress. In the corridor was an ungodly amount of spears and spikes linked to a repeating pressure plate, which was linked to an on/off lever. Then I decided it was a good idea to draw my magma into a giant tube in the sky that was attached to 15 screw pumps that would vomit magma onto the masses of invading foes (relentless assault mod, and 3mil dwarfbucks). The few that managed to escape the magma were overtaken by wildfires. Then the mansions for my retired miners who managed to dig up every inch of stone on the map. Then the giant waterfall that came down through my dining hall, splashing all my dwarfs with mist and happy thoughts. Then finally all the tasks my 150 odd dwarves were doing. My fps was down, and almost at a halt when I was sieged. Anybody else have fortresses like this, and felt the need to "downgrade"?

This isn't really a problem for me. My laptop can only manage about 25 fps on a good day, and about 6-7 sometimes. So I just deal with it and play an (even) slower, more thought-out game.

Wasn't expecting it, but it didn't stop me from writing one anyway. ;D

Also, my laptop actually does a pretty good job of handling DF...then again, I put my laptop under a LOT of stress...still, it REALLY doesn't like sites bigger than 6x6...it also doesn't like massive sieges, but big deal.  It does surprisingly well considering what I try to make it do.

I never have to deal with fps. My computer is a total badass, like the demonic cyber spawn of Chuck Norris and Shaun Connery (sp).

I had 100 fps when I flooded the world. the lowest it got was 40 when my 100+ fort all got up off their lazy butts to drag some stone to the refuse dump.

Lucky. In my biggest fort, I was crawlin' at 5 with 120 dwarves, and half of them were inactive. It usually dropped to 1-2, maybe 3 if I was lucky, during sieges. I played lat that slow of a fps for 6 game years, then rage-quit when the HFS finally killed off the last of my champions and went rampaging through my fort and killed everyone.

Yikes, the Orcs have a nasty language.  Traditional foreplay would be right out for them; how would they ever "say my name" for one another?  No wonder Ocrs are always so bloodthirsty and violent, they're getting sub-par action.

The biggest fort I've really ever had was about 80 in population, with pretty much all of them busy with hauling jobs, not to mention the massive tower I was building outside. My FPS didn't drop past the usual 100.
