Fey mood leads to Legendary?
« on: November 29, 2009, 12:11:03 pm »

I had a dwarf that was a peasant (usually i never bother peasant's because there more of a "civil" dwarf's) and he went into a fey mood, he took over my craft workshop and constructed a legendary artifact and he is now a legendary stonecrafter, it has not even been a year and i already have oodles of masterpieces of stone, would most people view this as a random game glitch or more of a boon? and in the first year? who knew!

this is not a glitch. Moody dwarves almost always do that. Only possessed dwarves don't. But this particular one is not quite a boon, either, as stonecrafters are pretty much useless anyway. In fact, he would do better in the military, having upped his stats by creating the mystic cow leather thong. (It menaces with spikes!)

since he created a useless artifact, most will consider this more of a nuisance, since it could have been a Weapon/armorsmith, or at least a carpenter/mason

yeah, thats actualy pretty common, dude. most people train up their peasants in armor or weapon making so that they don't get an untradeable, unuseable artifact. first year moods tend to be the worst, though, so if your happy now, wait for year 2! or 3! or 4! or 5! ect.ect.

You can still put him to work carving mugs for trade, so it's not totally useless.

I don't consider any of my legendary dwarves or artifacts useless.  A legendary stonecrafter is quite valuable early on in the game, especially if you have high quality stone like marble.

One of the drawbacks to having a dwarf go into a mood is that every once in a while you won't have the materials he needs to complete his project and he'll go insane.  In this state he can potentially harm or kill other dwarves and if he doesn't drown himself in your water supply or jump off a tall building he'll eventually die of hunger or dehydration.  Always make sure you have at least a little bit of every resource to keep this from happening.

all my legendary are useful.
All my dwarves are useful.

Some only because of the challenge they present, of course, but nonetheless useful.

If you have obsidian a stone crafter is good to have around; they can make very good swords.

I would argue that stone/woodcrafters ARE completely useless unless you want to make a ton of obsidian swords.

The only thing they can do is make items that I can only use to trow at merchants, however, with all the discarded clothing from dead dwarfs, goblins and kobolds, I realy dont need those. In fact, I use the trade caravans as garbage collectors that bringe me a ton of metal bars. (except for the elves. Those I drop water and magma on. Causing me to have even more garbage laying around...)

So, I usualy just draft my useless legendary as miner or soldier. Their own fault for making an artifact gabbro mug (that is only decorated with.... gabbro)

Legendary stone crafts can get you high export values and dispose of stone; I prefer to melt all the "imports" and drop the narrow and large gear into the magma. NIH is strong in this one.
