Succession Game - The Googlens of Waviness
« on: November 29, 2009, 01:44:35 am »

So, it occurred to me that all of these succession games would be so cool if done with a Google wave! People could have the wave open and update it on the fly, store the game save on it, and go from there! So, since I couldn't find a game already doing this, I figured that I would try to start one. I have Wave invites too, for those that might want to join but don't have Wave already, but do note that the invites can take a while to process (mine took almost a week).

What I was thinking of is doing a Dark Dwarves game. Preferably on a glacier, with underground water and magma.

However, since I wouldn't (hopefully) be the only one playing, I'm open to suggestions! Just say if you are interested in trying to use Google Wave a bit more, and we can work out the details on what we want the game to actually be later!
~edit~ - update

Okay, so after some discussing in the wave, we have decided upon using Dig Deeper, and will be genning for a world tonight using these settings:

terrifying
underground water
infinite water
magma pipe
HFS
Heavily forested?
soil (i'll let it gen quite a few to find sand)
flux
no aquifier

I've made the wave public, so if you want to join us and already have Google Wave, you can make a search for "with:public dwarf fortress succession" and ours will be the only result.

And, to let everyone know, I am out of wave invites now. Sorry to let you down.

~edit2~
And we have a map and have started!

Invites sent to both! Like I said, it could take a while for you to get it, but it will come eventually. Do any of you have a preference of map/game type or mods to use?

All right, google wave works for me now.

As for map I would like some place barren, glacier would be fine but those never support any sand. So, either a dessert or a tundra might be slightly more to my liking (I like glass!).

For modding, I would like to see anything which makes the game significantly more difficult. Be it the default creatures modded to be a whole bunch stronger, or new modded creatures that are a whole bunch stronger. Vanilla DF realy is a bit easy, and thus uneventfull for a succession fort. Unless of course we set some chalenges for ourselves.

So, for chalenges, I would suggest at least:
-No savescums,
-No atomsmashing,
-No completely locking the off fort (might depend on mods. This with orcs might not work. Not past the first winter at least)
-No traps/Limited number of traps (only the actualy trap buildings)

In short, add stuff to make the game 'fun'.

So far in the wave, people are voting for using the Dig Deeper mod. Would that fit your qualification for being difficult enough?
And, I agree with your limitations, even though it will be something very different for me to not rely upon traps. In my personal forts, I tend to try for huge megastructures and use traps to avoid having so many people in the military. But, I think that for a succession game, having more danger and less emphasis (and ability) to complete megastructures would work better.

Is Dig Deeper the mod that has more rock crystal spread around to make clear glass easier to obtain? If so, I'll be sure to make sure we have some sand then.

I'm in, sounds fun! :D
