Hmm, I'm confused with what to do with this engraver.
« on: November 28, 2009, 11:03:37 pm »

After marking all of my bedrooms to be smoothed, I went and set my engraver (I only use one, faster to get legendary at it) to engrave the walls along the path to my depot.

Now I'm split between enclosing him in a room while I pour water in, or to give him a awesome room complete with a magma pit...

He has a fondness to engrave elves.  Most of the times they are just elves traveling.
This obiviously means he is a Elven synthesizer and most be killed in the most disgracing way imaginable. >_>
Now however he started some more colorful engravings, "Engraved on the wall is an exceptionally designed image of a elf and a demon by 5ive Keskalegen.  The demon is striking down the elf./The demon is burning the elf/The elf is cringing.  The demon is laughing"
This must be rewarded with a golden room and all the artifacts I have.

He makes maybe 2:1 the boring traveling elf : tortured elf engravings.  What would you do?

Hmmm, maybe I should make a golden room over the magma pipe and collapse him into the magma.  Still dwarfy, and still relativly, um, death causing...

Only in dwarven culture is alcohol poisoning a death worthed investigating, while being impaled through several toes, a eye, and a thumb from a spiraling water[3] is not.  Because everyone knows, the only way a dwarf could get alcohol poisoning is if someone put poison into the alcohol.

Configure his room to be filled constantly with 1/7 water. From then on, every happy elf engraving he does, reconfigure the room to fill one water level higher. Every time he does a tortured elf engraving, reconfigure it to be one water level lower. If he does not learn his lesson, this will drown him.

Make sure that he's in the room when you flip the switch to start flooding the room, of course.

Put him in a corridor of stone. Have him engrave a wall. If it's happy elves, flood the room with magma. If it's burning elves, masterpiece room. Anything else, just let him be free to go.

It's obvious that he is only recounting stories of the various elves' deaths and the events leading up to them.  Giving the elves a backstory and such.  The fact that he wrote his tales of dieing elves on the walls of the trade depot proves how dwarfy he is. Having the elvish traders stare at the walls recounting elf legends and their deaths brings for half a season each year gives new meaning to the word.  Let him continue his ways and encourage it by giving him an obsidian room for him to engrave.

I have no opinion one way or the other on whether this dwarf is guilty of being a filthy elf lover, but if you decide he is: Drive him mad by defacing all of his masterwork engravings.

Keep him as a project, lock him inside a glass cube under a magma channel. When your doing some maintaince on your channels restock his food/water see how long he lasts

What this one said.
Give him a golden room with elves in cages.
Thus he can receive inspiration for more engravings of those tree loving elfs!
Also magma, lots and lots of magma around the elfs...

Have you checked the full history of the "elves are traveling" ones? Perhaps they're secretly documenting things like "this is the time when the stupid elves got their place taken over by demons and they had to relocate".

If it turns ou to be something normal (and do check the events preceding the travels in case it doesn't mention they're traveling because they got their butts whooped), proceed with defacing every non-elf-torture image, and if he's not insane or tantruming by the end, consider letting him free after that, since he obviously doesn't care either way. Or magma him.

Give him a shooting gallery with elves. Bonus points if elves are currently at airport trade depot and he uses ballista. Extra bonus points if he is accompanied by other terrorists siege operators.
Then look if he shot over heads too much for just missing. If so, he is an elf sympathizer and must trade at depot too. If not, gift him that shooting gallery and make him a Trader of your fort at springs. Every time elves come, he will gain more and more experience of elven deaths, which results in more "dying elves" engravings.

I agree. We need context.

Next time an elven siege comes, send him out alone. If he lives, he lives. If he dies, he dies.

I am with Chewykittens on this one.
giving the Elves to be slaughtered a backstory simply makes it that more evil.
it's like killing henchmen with wives and children. love it!

he is a Elven synthesizer

I hear that if he survives, the war experience will make him a better engraver to boot.
