Okay, what blocks line-of-sight without blocking wagon access?

Well, training last year's recruits up in wrestling has gotten them to nearly champion status, with half a season's weapon training getting them up to standard skill. This is letting me bootstrap up the other melee squad.

Steel production is coming along nicely. Steel armour, shields, and weapons all around.

Next season's raw recruits should allow for a third melee squad, as well.

And, hopefully, the remaining champions will heal by the spring.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Seal the entrance.

If you can't fight 'em, then trap them outside and prepare on your own.  Let it be a war of attrition.  Yes, goblins are outside, but you have all the time in the world to prepare, and the merchants might just arrive and dispatch the infantry for you.

Seal the entrance.

That would be boring.

Not if it's done by sending in the trained war-seals.

...Are seals tamable / are they actually in the default RAWs?

On a related note, I use heat-seeking dogs; a cage full of dogs right next to a pressure plate that lets them all loose.

So the gobs arrive, you kill all of them, then the dogs murder your framerate. Niiiiice.

Xbow dwarfs will seem to train at archery targets and be more lethal when the goblins come back.  (not sure but it seems like they need to be off duty to do that.)

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

On a related note, because I saw the training time for xbow dwarfs mentioned earlier, it has been my experience that a dwarf firing at a live enemy will tend to skill up faster than one firing at a archery target.  The difference is something on the order of one half.

Is a sudden dip in framerate indicative of ambushers, or is it just my CPU heating up?

Ambushers.  Possibly an elf siege, but that's not really any different from a bunch of ambushes.

Crap. It's winter, so this means a stealth goblinmas.

Nuts.

Just about anything that causes pathfinding spam will also murder your framerate. One I've noticed is if you take your patrolling soldiers off-duty while they're far from the barracks and they decide to go spar; they'll continually spam pathfinding until they get to the barracks.

Indeed, but that would be explainable. The dip was sudden and UNexplainable, just as winter hit.

Turned out it was three or four goblin thieves, and two melee ambush squads.
And a few goats.
