I've had trouble getting more than a dozen or so good marksdwarves; a few champions tend to end up expending all the practice ammo.

TIP : Once they reach champion status, put them on active duty. They won't grumble about patrols anymore.

That'll save you from the machine gun effect.


also, I've already got a fair number of archery targets to compliment the active number of actual practicing dwarves. it's like, I've already got over 200 of them, yet only have about 30 beds.

I see now why no-one does multi-storied diagonal walls. They're an right pain in the arse to make. you have to make a 1x1 bridge on the outside edges, and then a bridge for every strip... x.x

I'd try for 60 archery targets to see if that works. If not, it just narrows the problem down!

Yea, I swear I remember reading somewhere about this guy who had this problem with dwarves not practicing, and making a number of targets equivalent to the number of marksdwarves seemed to solve it.

Archery targets aren't a problem, but now since they've finally agreed that holding backpacks in their hand is a stupid idea, they've started practicing what I want them to. As well has have the next batch of raw recruits begin training for their blades.

Just order your archers to train with no shield or armor equipped. If they wrestle and pick up anything they will then drop it and so they will always be able to pick up ammunition both for combat and for training.

This of course means your crossbow dwarves will be more vulnerable than if they were covered in plate armor, but so what?

Soap makers are plentiful!


Alternatively, have your dwarves wrestle and spar with steel weapons. Anyone with a bruised spine is given a crossbow. They will not wrestle anymore, so they can be set to use heavy armor and a shield, and they will not get their hands too full to grab ammo.

In all my forts, I reckoned that marksdwarves are 10 times more lazy than other guys. I mean, while my 10 wrestlers got chanpions, my 5 marksdwarves spent 9/10 of their time doing nothing, with sometimes the "training" job being generated, for the time to shoot ONE bolt... And I had more than enough xbows, targets (each one set as a room) and Armok knows how many bone bolts. So I just said "Aw, screw it!" and let them train at their own pace, making up quality with quantity.

that and it's just more efficient right now to have everyone in their own squad, as the squad member won't stand guard while the leader is drinking booze.

I don't bother using practice bolts. I just station them right next to the ammo dump, which is on an overlook next to the entrance. Then I just let them do live fire training.

Sure, sure, I might lose a few of them, but thats okay. They train up exceptionally fast firing at living targets.

There's actually sort of a bug I use here that's pretty useful.  If you assign a patrol route to a single soldier squad, they'll keep using it even if you later merge them into a larger squad.  As a result, you can have a single squad whose members will take various positions when activated no matter that the squad leader is doing.

If you really want to train up marksdwarves quickly, you should have them shoot at live targets. This gives vastly more experience than shooting at the range, and you can "force" them to train (just by having them be on-duty). Good ways to do this involve things like drawbridge traps into holding cells, or cleaning up the wildlife in an underground pool/river.

usually I let them practice for about a year or so, then post them out. Since they become career soldiers at Elite, you can leave them on duty for far longer than trained citizens.
