how to change controls to switch between z-lvls? (40d12)

How do i get my controls back to the way they were in the original 40d? (, and .)
< and > are just a pain to press that often and i can't figure out a way to change them.

well, i found the problem:
Some keys don't work, i just don't get why. Others however do :/

Yeah, the keyboard support for the d* series is pretty inconsistent.  You are missed, "shift +" and "shift -" (but not enough to give up zooming!)

In d16, at least, and I think in the original 40d Shift+Numpad 5 takes you up a level and Ctrl+Numbad 5 takes you down a level. Much easier to use than < or >.

again: Problems
ctrl + Numpad 5 works fine, shift + Numpad 5 doesn't
however ctrl or shift + normal 5 work. . .
how can i ever understand this?!
