Material Usage
« on: November 28, 2009, 07:58:10 am »

So, I'm planning out a new fort, after getting a little bored with my first fort(since it's mostly unplanned chaos and has been more or less without any real challenge; my military has crushed several sieges and I've nearly gotten the King on wealth alone) and so, among other things, I'm looking into building some fancy roads.

My question is, can I build a road out of glass, or would I have to use a different material instead? I have in mind this neat looking green glass road leading up to the fort, but it might not work.

Afaik, you only need some blocks, any material will work.

soap works too. I had dragon soap roads in a past fortress.

So basically I can make green glass blocks, and then build a road out of them?

Niiice. I may build the walls and bridges out of glass too, then, if that's the case. Emerald Fortress, anyone?

Just remember that you are gonna need either a lot of fuel(1 each block), or magma.

Oh, I've got magma. Already ensured that.

Green glass blocks are a popular building material for some forts, since it's easy to get them to be all the same color, unlike with rock blocks. They're also magma-safe, so you can have e.g. a massive tank made of glass holding back magma from falling on your enemies, with a clearly-visible glass hatch holding it back.

Good luck!

Any construction is magma safe. You could make a soap tank holding back magma if you really wanted to. Or even wood. Though glass is cool because you can imagine the goblins seeing the magma within ready to burn them.

Glass buildings, once built, are magma safe as well. Wood can't say that.

I've been wondering this myself. I didn't want to try it, because I don't have much glass at this point, but it looks like blocks will indeed work. Thanks guys, and thanks to the op as well!

Sorry, you're quite right, but glass is also safe for use in things like bridges, gratings, floodgates, and so on, which is what I meant.

Alright, sorry for any confusion I may have created. It was a mere misunderstanding of what you said.

Too bad mechanisms cannot be made out of glass, not finding bauxite/flux makes most magma projects shatter in pieces.

Guys, guys, guys. Stop!

If you're going to build a megaproject of glass - wall in the whole of your fortress, both above and below ground, with green glass blocks. Then make a crater around it and fill it with water or magma.
Emerald city? Pah! Emerald Isolated Biosphere!

It could be green glass, but it is crystal to compensate the cheat.  ;D

Not at all.  You can recreate just about any magma project with careful use of pumps.  It does increase size requirements somewhat, with the pumps and the piping, but dwarfs don't go for those dainty, elf-like miniprojects anyway.
