What is wrong with me?
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:56:43 pm »

I just got a fort to >100 dorfs, and a dungeon master.  Too fully commemorate his non-mandate-giving and his cloak and mitten wearing awesomeness, I created the most metal bedroom EVER.  It is entirely made of smoothed obsidian, with 20 obsidian statues, obsidian doors, obsidian grates, and magma pools to boot.  To fully finish the evil mastermind look, I found a couple of dwarves that didn't have any friends, (except for a woodcutter that the DM had a grudge on), made a cave-in generator, and trapped them in cages, prominently displayed in his room.

Suddenly, looking back on my hard work, I don't feel as satisfied as I should.  In fact, I feel awful.  The DM, a guy named Urist Sealstood, is a pretty laid-back guy.  He is friends with everyone (except those in his cages), and helps out to make my fort a utopia for everyone!  And I just went, got a bunch of random dorfs, partying in my painstakingly crafted meeting room, and tricked them into caging themselves for no reason other than to fufuill my aesthetic preferences!  What did they do to deserve this?  They had no friends.

I get the feeling my DM dissaproves of my actions.  (Yes, he's ecstatic, but with dorfs that doesn't really matter!)  I feel so...

guilty.

What is this?  Is this a concience?  What if the dorfs actually do have souls?  What constitutes a soul?  Am I becoming soft?  HELP!

You have done nothing wrong. You may, however, wish to replace the prisoners with large, threatening (tame) animals. Like Giant Cave Spiders.

And I'm stealing your idea.

Aha!  I finally figured it out!  The morality hard-wired into my brain kicked in because of the METHOD I employed in choosing my victims!  All I needed to do is release the poor sods, and wait for a couple of nobles to come along.  They are socially acceptable to cage.  Poor planters and woodcutters without friends aren't.

Anyone who is friends with woodcutters best be carpenters or other woodcutters.
And to lock them up is a very serrious crime!
You best watch your back around your other woodcutters and carpenters...

Also, they'd starve to death unless fed.

Just sayin'.

I have a feeling the Dwarven Workers Union is going to want a word with you...

It is fairly nicely designed.  You might consider swapping some of that obsidian for iron or steel, though.

I appreciate your concerns. Make sure you have a reason for cruelty. It can be completely twisted or arbitrary, but it helps if you have a reason. Perhaps an immigrant brought a cat as a pet. Perhaps a dwarf organized too many parties. Or is a noble.

Also, how did you capture your own dwarfs? Does making a cage fall on one do the trick? Will someone feed them and give them water? I'm curious.

Well, you're doing it all wrong. You need more cages.

AFAIK stuff in cages are in some kind of stasis field, their time is stopped, can go underwater and survive even if they are not water-breathing, could go in magma if cage is magma safe, and get not a single scratch.

They could die from old age, but I've never caged something for so much time
AHowever, If I remember good, I had some goblins staying caged for quite a long time, waiting of rmy arena to be built, and none died.

Sadly, friendly units don't get the stasis field. Odd, huh?

Well, that's really unfair.

But I remember now that if a children is snatched, and you cage the snatcher, the kid will remain in the bag, and dwarves will feed him. Do this happen to non-snatched guys?

What you did wrong, however, is that there are no burning kittens.

Goblins have no age limit, they won't die of old age.(Just like elves)

And just to confirm, dwarves do feed caged dwarves, I've tried to starve a noble to death in a cage placed in the dining room, but he got fed and watered.

To the OP, why dwarves? Why not replace the poor guys with the dungeon master's favourite animals? Or better, megabeasts? Not that using dwarves is wrong, it's just counter-productive, they won't be hauling the food out of your kitchens when they're stuck in a cage.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

I tend to use grizzly bears for this situation, it's a lot more badass imo.

I mean, what's awesomer, a pet grizzly or an annoying bearded fellow crying for food (Which is what I imagine them to be doing after being caged in)

use the cages for Justice, so that any offending crimanals get locked up in the Dungeon Masters Tomb...that sounded spooky.
